PROVO – Athletics administrators are starting to signal contracts in football seasons years in advance, but have not predicted the global coronavirus pandemic and how it would devastate their carefully planned work, in addition to the lives lost and the economic effect on COVID. -19.
BYU is no exception, as Tom Holmoe has scheduled games with war parts such as Boise State, Stanford and North Carolina State until 2035.
But once, or rather, several decisions made through meetings as they retire to play a season amid a global pandemic, part of the Cougars 2020 calendar has been eliminated. With each success and a NCAA governing framework that has yet to govern the prestige of the season at least until the end of August, the school football season is unlikely to start on time, if it plays.

September 3: Utah (cancelled)
Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City
It was intended to be a possibility for BYU to break a nine-game loss streak opposed to its northern archers. Instead, this opportunity will have to wait at least a year.
The annual rivalry of the Holy War has been interrupted only once since 1946, which was originally planned a two-year hiatus for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. In a stroke of fate, the two groups faced off at the Las Vegas Bowl in 2015 and alternated the venues of their homes each year for the next four years.

The rivalry game was replaced through the Cougars’ first game opposed to the Midshipmen, and his first game opposed to an army academy other than the former rival of the Mountain West Air Force since 1989. One of the 3 road games cancelled through the Pac-12 on your switch to a convention schedule only. The Cougars have an all-time 7-20 record against former WAC rival Sun Devils, but have not faced others since 1998.

BYU had never faced the Golden Gophers in football. The historic assembly between the two groups will have to wait the year after the pandemic.

The Cougars continue to struggle, adding a featured Sun Belt Conference to update a series of cancellations and postponements for the 2020 season.
BYU added a series of homes with Troy, starting September 26 in Provo, with a comeback game scheduled for September 5, 2026 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy, Alabama. The Trojans, who have won 21 convention championships and six in the last 14 years at the Sun Belt, have never faced BYU in football.
“Troy is one of the most productive football systems at the Sun Belt Conference for many years,” Tom Holmoe, BYU’s chief sports director, said in a press release. “Despite the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 school football season, we’ve signed a contract with Troy over the last 3 weeks and we’re ahead of the Trojans.”
FORMER BYU offensive line coach Ryan Pugh is lately in his season as Troy’s offensive coordinator.

October 2: State of Utah (cancelled)

The opening of byU’s house was intended to be “the other” rivalry game: the one with a car wheel as a trophy. The Cougars are 49-37-3 against the Aggies, who have won two of the last 3 games.
But the Aggies were removed from the calendar when Mountain West became the time for the FBS convention to postpone the fall season indefinitely. Like the MAC, the league expects to restart in the spring, between “the option to postpone other fall competitions”.

The Cougars’ plan for the Huskie Chi-Town Showdown was moved first from SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois, to NIU Stadium in DeKalb. But it was canceled when the Mid-American Conference became the first FBS league to cancel the fall football season.

The Broncos have an all-time 7-3 record against BYU, adding a very good 5-0 score on the famous Smurf Turf.

San Diego state athletic director John David Wicker first told a local Southern California radio station that the Aztecs planned to play the cougars in one of their two games outside the conference. But the plan was disappointed by the mountain west conference’s decision.
“When we started the procedure months ago to see what fall sports would look like, we did it with a non-negotiable side: the protection and well-being of our student-athletes,” Wicker later said. “After an ongoing consultation with local and national fitness officers and in collaboration with the Mountain West Conference, we need to postpone our fall sports competitions.

November 21: North Alabama

FCS Big South postponed the football season on Tuesday, but league members like North Alabama were allowed to play “up to four non-conference games in the fall.” That means the Lions plan to take on the Cougars, recently scheduled for November 21. The other North Alabama games are on September 3 in western Illinois, September 12 off Jacksonville State and September 19 in Chattanooga.
“Our plan is to take a look at all our features and have the ability to play a full series of games, combining autumn and spring,” A.A. said. Sports Director Mark Linder. “One of the biggest considerations of our players is not having the opportunity to play a full schedule. This plan provides maximum flexibility to play 4 games outside the conference in the fall and the Big South calendar in the spring.”

The Cougars and Cardinals have not faced each other since 2004 when Stanford won 37-10 in Northern California. Although the game is not postponed, the two groups are expected to meet in 2022 (Stanford, California), 2025 (Provo), 2026 (Stanford, California), 2028 (Stanford, California), 2029 (Provo), 2031 (Provo) and 2035 (Provo).

Bowl set: owned by ESPN

BYU recently signed a seven-year deal with ESPN that included the rights to be placed in a bowling game owned and operated through the world’s leading athlete in 2020, 2022 and 2024, with more arrangements to play in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. 2021, 2023 and 2025. The contract also includes provisions that will be decided through the Cheez-It Bowl up to twice in this contract.
There’s no guarantee that any of those bowl games will take place in 2020: the Redbox Bowl is the first postseason school football game to retire from the 2020 season when it won its senior year with the San Francisco 49ers and Levi’s Stadium.
Bowling games run at a loss and rely heavily on the sale and distribution of price tickets among school enthusiasts to get closer to the break-even point. But none of those bowling games have been officially booked for the upcoming season either (again, if there is one).
