A climate activist has to cycle 258 kilometres from Gloucestershire to Essex on a bamboo motorbike to deliver a ball to a football match meant to encourage others to go greener.

Kate Strong, who is also an executive training representative and three-time cycling world record holder, is taking a ride on her bamboo-framed motorcycle as part of Green Football Weekend, a crusade mobilizing fans, clubs and leagues. and components to take action on the climate.

The match between Forest Green Rovers FC and Colchester United FC will take place on Saturday, and Ms. Strong will have the “privilege” of delivering the ball for the match.

“It’s a great privilege because I’ve never been to a football match before and I wouldn’t say I’m a typical football fan,” the 44-year-old, who was recently in London, told the PA news agency.

“The fact that the Green Football Weekend recognises the importance of involving other communities and other people simply to get as many people as possible to communicate (about climate change) shows lateral thinking, because cyclists want to care about it as much as footballers. And tennis players: we all want to work together.

“It’s a metaphor. “

Climate activists have made headlines for their moves to get the government and the general public to take climate change seriously, with the latest stunt being throwing soup at the Mona Lisa painting at the Louvre Museum in Paris on January 28.

Ms Strong said: “I think we need any level of activism and advocacy.

“The activism does grab the headlines, but if all of us are activists it would be anarchy.

“I’m definitely not an activist, I’m very interested in collaboration and connections, and I think we just want as many activities as possible, where other people feel like they’re moving the wheel forward in the world. intelligent steering. “

Ms Strong will begin her walk at 9am on Thursday and cycle 161km before spending the afternoon at a football fan’s home in Barnet, north London, and then continuing on to Colchester on Friday.

He will turn the ball over to the players on Saturday around 9:30 a. m.

She will be joined along by a group of people, adding an organisation of schoolchildren from Nailsea, North Somerset.

“It’s amazing that other people signed up for me,” she said.

“It’s not a solo adventure and it’s wonderful to share this experience with others to show that a percentage challenge is a challenge halved, and the cycle feels much shorter when there are other people with me. “

She added that training has been “non-existent” because her bike was being fixed over winter and she is nomadic, often caring for people’s pets while they are on holiday.

“I resigned from the position I was recruiting for to do a three-month climate cycle, which ended in September, and returned to London to discover the rent had increased a lot,” he said.

“I couldn’t justify the charge of what other people were charging, plus the extra expense charge when there were empty houses around. “

She hopes the motorcycle rides will motivate other people to “do something” to combat climate change.

Referring to a statistic published on the Green Football Weekend website, he said: “If football enthusiasts in the UK ate one vegetarian meal a day, we could save the equivalent of taking 5. 5 million cars off the roads, every year. “
