FOXBORO, Mass. – One of the stars of last year’s New England Patriots preseason now takes his place on the team.
A year after recording the most productive numbers of all Patriots receivers in educational camps and exhibition games, Jakobi Meyers fell this summer, jeopardizing his position on the list.
Meyers, one of two undrafted rookies (along with Gunner Olszewski) who will be among the 53 Patriots players in 2019, largely invisible at the start of his NFL education camp and then suffered a shoulder injury that prevented him from playing.team training for six consecutive workouts.
Meyers joined the fray at the camp, and had his most productive summer functionality on Sunday, receiving 4 assists on five goals in 11-on-11 exercises, but has not yet lost the contactless red shirt he wore in the last 4..practices.
“Of course, I’m frustrated because I’m not there to compete every single day and because I can get representatives,” Meyers said after Sunday’s session, which marked the patriots’ last practice in front of journalists in 2020.”But I need to do it, focus on what I can do that on what I can’t do.It’s not an excuse for me to check it out because I’m not on the floor.
“I’ll have to be there mentally. The game is not just physical. So what I can compete in is what I have to do, in terms of being there for the representatives of the cinema or the mentality, simply taking advantage of all the opportunities that are presented to me.because the game probably wouldn’t wait for him to come back.I just have to keep up with as productive as I can.”
Despite his high-profile communication issues with Tom Brady and his modest line of final stats (26-359-0 in 15 games), Meyers was the top-trusted game at the Time of the Patriots last season behind star Julian Edelman. The old man gave the impression of having a great chance of retaining his position on a receiving body that made no high-level additions during the off-season.
That’s changed.
Olszewski now turns out to be a safe bet to be part of the lineup as a broad return/kick after a fair camp, and veteran rookie Damiere Byrd brings the mandatory speed to this position organization.Bryd’s lack of good fortune in deep balls this summer was troubling, but he remained healthy in camp and appears to have a strong connection to quarterback Cam Newton, his former Carolina Panthers teammate.
Even 2019 practice team Devin Ross made a stronger case than Meyers in education camp, fainted after a hot start.
With Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry blocked and Mohamed Sanu not far behind, there may be no place for Meyers in the 2020 Patriots, the young receiver still has 4 days to show his worth before Saturday’s deadline.
“I just need to be the most productive Jakobi Meyers I can be,” Meyers said.”Just prove that I’m trustworthy and just prove that I’m improving. They don’t need who’s going through to get stuck or who happens to go up and down.
“They need someone who is a consistent product, every time they pass through the field, they know what they’re going through to get.”
