Southampton have West Brom head coach Carlos Corberan as a candidate to be their new manager, along with former Danish manager Kasper Hjulmand and at least one other foreign coach.
Sky Sports News has learned that there has so far been no contact with current Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl, who was Ralph Hassenhuttl’s assistant at St Mary’s two years ago, and is seen as the first favourite to get the job.
It’s thought ex-Roma boss Daniele de Rossi was also a name of interest, but Southampton aren’t currently planning to pursue the Italian coach.
The Saints are still in the early stages of locating a replacement for Russell Martin, who was sacked after an Emergency Board meeting on Sunday, following a 5-0 home loss to Tottenham.
This functionality prompted a resolution that Southampton’s board of directors were reluctant to make and as such the club had been actively searching for a successor.
However, they would like to have a new head coach in place for Sunday’s game against Fulham, live on Sky Sports, if possible, though getting the right candidate is seen as paramount.
However, any deal for Corberan could be problematic, because it is thought that West Brom have a really extensive release clause built into his contract worth over £2m. security at the back of the Premier League.
