Danilo Cataldi is reportedly disappointed after Lazio appointed Mattia Zaccagni as the club’s new captain, forcing the intervention of president Claudio Lotito.
The Biancocelesti needed to locate a new team captain after former starter Ciro Immobile left for Besiktas earlier this month, having succeeded Senad Lulic in 2021. Speculation abounds about the club’s next leader on the field.
Zaccagni showed on his social networks that he has been named Lazio’s new captain for the 2024-25 season, wearing the armband in Saturday’s 3-0 pre-season friendly over Hansa Rostock. Alessio Romagnoli also thought of it as an option to take on the honour.
Corriere della Sera (via TMW) notes how Cataldi expected to be named Lazio captain after Immobile and even wore the armband in retirement to Auronzo di Cadore, so he was disappointed following the decision to hand it over to Zaccagni.
Some players in the Biancocelesti squad expected the winger to reject the honor to allow Cataldi to take it, but that happened.
Lotito was forced to intervene and spoke harshly to Cataldi, begging him to follow the example of Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro, who “always shows commitment without breaking his balls”.
