Alistair Johnston insists Celtic want to be more determined against a top-tier opponent after the “unacceptable” 6-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid which he described as the toughest night of his career.
Celtic were trailing 1-0 in Spain when Daizen Maeda was sent off before Atletico went wild in the second half with 4 goals.
“Red is clearly frustrating, but at the same time we make mistakes in each and every place, in each and every game, in each and every goal we’ve conceded, personally, individually,” right-back Johnston said.
“And the quality is very good. One takes a look at some finishes and it’s amazing. But that’s what this point is about. “
“We want to leave it blank. It’s a complicated feature from each and every point of view. Definitely for Celtic, but in my professional career I’ve never had a game like that where they almost do what they want with you.
“It’s frustrating, it’s difficult, because you can’t take the ball and you feel like you can’t get into it and create anything, it’s just wave after wave.
“And that’s something we’ll be disappointed with because, even after we go down to 10, as complicated as it is, it doesn’t mean we have to give up so much territory, ownership and so many opportunities.
“We want to look in the mirror, separately and collectively, and perceive what we want to do there because it’s unacceptable. “
Celtic, last in the organization with one point from 4 games, have been competitive at times in their Champions League campaign, but 3 red cards in 4 games have wreaked havoc.
Johnston said, “If you don’t get anything out of it, it’s a wasted night. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, you have to take a look back at each and every game and check if there is anything positive in them to grow as a group.
“We have to go back to it with unbiased eyes and opinions because, even if they were on another level, there were some simple things that we can leave blank.
“We played with nine men at Feyenoord and looked more solid. Obviously, it’s a longer era, but I think we made it too easy, we were too passive. Maybe we would have shown more with a 10-man organization. “We felt like we could have sunk even deeper. “
