Celtic Today – October 5 – David Potter's Celtic Diary

Celtic had the chance today to defeat the hapless Falkirk 7-0 at Celtic Park. The crowd is 10,000 people and they see Celtic at their best. Jimmy McGrory scored a hat-trick, Paddy Connolly scored two and Alec Thomson and Peter Scarf scored the break.

The team’s form is surely terrible, with just one win so far this season, but they are still loyal and they are there in large numbers to witness an honourable (and even unfortunate) 2-2 draw today at Douglas Park, Hamilton. Tommy Kiernan, a good partner rather than a superstar, scored either goal.

The sparse crowd of 17,000 tells its own story about the horror of this season, but today there is at least one bout in a 2-2 draw against Jock Stein’s Dunfermline at Celtic Park. Frank Haffey was injured and John Fallon had a game in goal. , and Bobby Murdoch and Frank Brogan scored the goals. But Jock Stein had to take a look at the crisis that Celtic went through in the autumn of 1963. . . and wonder.

Celtic made their debut in Lisbon by beating F. C. Zurich 3-0 (5-0 on aggregate) in Zurich thanks to two goals from Tommy Gemmell and one from Steve Chalmers. The Swiss had been bad losers after the first leg, but tonight they were beaten by an incredible team.

You just couldn’t make this up! Frankly, Tony Cascarino underperformed at Celtic Park, a sadness after what he had done elsewhere. Notably, he simply couldn’t score a goal. But today, against Hearts, he came on as a substitute and (finally) scored a goal. And then expelled! Neither Tony nor Celtic knew whether to laugh or cry. For the record, Celtic won the match 3-1 with Mark McNally and Charlie Nicholas as the other scorers.
