Manchester City broke away from Lyon in the Champions League when a 3–1 debatable defeat caused Pep Guardiola to miss a semi-final behind his former club, Bayern Munich. (More news)
Lyon beat City at the 2018-19 level of organization – tied at home – and returned to tournament favorites in Lisbon on Saturday.
Maxwel Cornet scored in the last two games between the groups and in the bow towards the middle of the first half as City struggled to get acquainted with Guardiola’s five-man defense.

That lineup fell before the hour and Kevin De Bruyne tied, but replacement Moussa Dembele restored Lyon’s lead after a debatable counterattack with 11 minutes to the end, then added another after a mistake through Ederson.
Raheem Sterling failed in an open purpose among Dembele’s decisive movements, as the City suffered more and more European misery.
Failures in City’s replacement formula were exposed with 24 minutes played.
Kyle Walker, operating in the back of the wing, kept Karl Toko Ekambi transparent from a long pass ahead, with Eric Garcia’s most recent challenge kicking the ball on Cornet Road for the first time after a VAR exam.
Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes endured some nervous moments that bravely blocked Ilkay Gundogan, before De Bruyne tried to overtake City after the break.
De Bruyne, however, discovered his diversity with 21 minutes to the end, opting for the right back corner after Sterling walked away from Jason Denayer and calmly reunited with his teammate.
Lopes had to be attentive to a strong push from Gabriel Jesus, who then made a mistake to confront Sterling’s center on the volley, but Lyon also attacked with renewed vigour.
The time for the French national team came in special cases, as City appealed in vain for a foul on Aymeric Laporte and an offside against Toko Ekambi, who passed the ball between his legs to Dembélé in play.
The striker controlled an ending below Ederson and returned to the arc with 3 minutes of general time to play, jumping over the Ederson spill with a houssem Aouar shot moments after Sterling missed the target when Jesus crossed at the other end.
Walker took the lead in the time off as City continued to fight, but once back they failed at Europe’s elite club festival.
What does that mean? Semi-finals a Franco-German affair
There were many debates before the Champions League quarter-finals about the importance of group momentum on a varied calendar across Europe due to the coronavirus pandemic, it turns out that an era of rest is best.
Ligue 1, whose season he left, and the Bundesliga, which returned first and therefore finished first, each provided two semi-finalists, their groups appearing with impressive physical and intellectual energy.
Lyon had to continue to oppose the City and capitalize on the unfortunate mistakes in a remarkable victory.
Cornet, the Lyon boy
After three goals in two games against City last season, Cornet returned where he had left off with a very good final while Ederson hit after Garcia’s entry. Normally a striker, Cornet invited boxes as a side in this squad and also directed his defensive tasks diligently, making a very good blockage in sterling’s form to shoot just before halftime.
Pep also thinks about win-win equality
Complacency may have been a challenge as other big names withdrew from the competition, but Guardiola turns out to have the opposite challenge: the City manager continues to meddle in his formula for those wonderful Champions League matches with very little success.
City to fit into the Lyon team but never as comfortable as the lower war games on paper. An asymmetrical defensive line left Toko Ekambi for the opening game, meaning Guardiola’s men continued the game from that point.
Key to Opta
– Rudi García del Lyon becomes the first French coach to lead a Frenchman to the Champions League semi-finals since Claude Puel in 2009–10 with Lyon.
– Since his progression since his first seven Champions League quarter-finals as coach with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Guardiola has been eliminated in his 3 appearances at this level of the festival with City (2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20).
– This is the first time since 2012-13 that two other nations will be represented through clubs in the semi-finals.
– Sterling made his 50th appearance in the Champions League, over 25 years and 251 days. The only Englishman to succeed at this level at a more youthful age Wayne Rooney in 2010, at 24 years and 115 days.
– Fernandinho made his 58th participation in the Champions League, that of all City players in the competition.
What’s next?
A dynamic Lyon now faces the arduous task of taking on Bayern, whose frantic form shows no signs of slowdown in Wednesday’s semi-final.
