Champions League pots revealed for new format as Arsenal miss out but Liverpool sign up for Man City

Arsenal lost a position in Pot 1 for next season’s Champions League.

There will be 36 clubs at the organisational level of European football’s most sensible competition, all competing in the same league as the previous four-team organisation system.

The clubs will play 8 matches, all against other teams, adding 4 at home and 4 away. The 8 most sensible at the end of these matches will go directly to the round of 16 of the round of 16, while those who finish between 9th and 24th place in the initial phase will face play-offs to sign up for them.

As always, UEFA will split the clubs into 4 other pots, with the teams playing two groups of those pots.

The final pots will only be defined at the start of the new season, with qualifying matches to be played, but it has already been shown that Arsenal will be in the groups of Pot 2.

This is due to UEFA’s club coefficient rankings, with the Gunners in 22nd place due to a six-year absence from the Champions League ahead of this season.

This is a particularly important result for Arsenal as they would have had to face two groups from Pot 1 even if they were in the first pot themselves.

Manchester City and Liverpool will take their places in Pot 1, while Aston Villa, back at the top of the European table for the first time since 1983, know they will most likely be in Pot 4, depending on which clubs make it. Qualification.

Barcelona will occupy the last position in Pot 1, as Roma did not get their place in the Champions League and Bayer Leverkusen lost in the Europa League final.

The level draw will take place on August 29.
