It wasn’t love at first sight.

After the couple from Buffalo, New York, Nick Weith and Damian Mordecai saw a giant Victorian-style space on a popular Instagram account called Cheap Old Houses, they drove an hour south to a village called Gowanda (2,700 inhabitants) to the historic property.

Initially, Mordecai, a 39-year-old nonprofit executive, “less excited” about the concept of living so far from the city. But the couple were drawn to the estate’s majestic brick facade, the stunning slate shingle roof and the widow’s tower. By the time they were returned in the car, Mordecai sold out. “We have to buy it,” he told Weith, a 26-year-old educator.

His mansion of the 1870s took place on the weekend of March 13, when President Trump declared the coronavirus a national emergency.

WHY UNDERSTANDING ‘MOTIVATION’ CAN AWAIT YOU FOR A REAL ESTATE AGREEMENT

In the days that followed, the orders for shelter at the site took effect in New York City. At the time, Mordecai’s workplace was already exploring solutions to paint houses, so the prospect of a long trip to work was not a problem. They closed the house 2,300 square feet, four bedrooms and 11/2 bathrooms in June for $52,500, and estimate renovations will charge $50,000 more. (Cheap Old Houses posted a photo of the space with a caption that read, “I was saved!”)

Given the high incomes of cities and the developing realities of remote labor that become ubiquitous as the pandemic persists, the acquisition of a “cheap old house” in a small town or rural domain fits in an increasingly exciting direction for some millennials.

“The concept of home ownership is highly unlikely for many others,” says Elizabeth Finkelstein, who founded the online page Cheap Old Houses and the Instagram thread in 2016 with her husband, online page designer Ethan. “Some other people are tired of pushing paper and searching for pixels all day long. They dream of running with their hands. The site is helping others realize that it’s not like that you can think that you can achieve those goals.”

The flow of Cheap Old Houses broadcasts new listings of genuine properties for old houses across the country, with a limit of $100,000, to a “design-loving” network passionate about preservation and historical recovery projects.
