Chelsea 1-4 Celtic: Blues win in alarming pre-season defeat

Chelsea had little reaction as Celtic scored four goals in a shock defeat in front of a sparse crowd in Indiana.

Enzo Maresca’s side were comfortable at the Stade Notre-Dame, trailing 2-0 at half-time before conceding twice in a minute late in the second half.

Christopher Nkunku scored a delayed consolation goal, completing convincingly from the penalty spot in the 90th minute after Raheem Sterling went down, but did little to distract attention from an alarming defeat.

The Blues failed to claim their first win of their US tour after drawing 2-2 with League One side Wrexham on Thursday in a heated match in California.

There is no rancor between Chelsea and Celtic in Indiana, but there is only one team in the races.

Celtic took the lead in the 19th minute when a well-designed little corner shot through Matt O’Riley – the midfielder superbly curling the ball into the far corner, past a helpless Robert Sanchez.

That lead was doubled 14 minutes later when O’Riley turned provider and slotted Kyogo Furuhashi into the empty net.

Raheem Sterling, one of three Chelsea substitutes who appeared on the bench at half-time, added a threat down the Blues’ left flank, hitting the post less than a minute after the restart.

But it would be Celtic who had the clinical merit in the second half, as well as in the first, taking advantage of a defensive confusion to score thanks to the Honduran Luis Palma.

Then, Palma set up Michael Johnston’s goal. He duly slipped under Sanchez to make it 4-0 for Celtic. Nkunku came on shortly after from the penalty spot, but Chelsea were already well defeated.

It closes a preseason for Celtic, who had already beaten DC United 4-0 and surprised Manchester City 4-3.

Meanwhile, Chelsea still have to face Mexican Club América, Manchester City and Real Madrid, before returning to Stamford Bridge to host Serie A champions Inter Milan.

Maresca is hoping for his first win since Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea manager.
