LONDON (AP) – Millie Bright’s goal helped secure the Community Shield for Chelsea with a 2-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday when women returned to England after a six-month absence due to a pandemic.
The centre-back produced a quality moment in the 66th minute from outside the area after striker Sam Kerr wasted four chances for the Super League champions.
The breakthrough came four minutes after City drove Jill Scott out when they won a moment by resping for a slippery challenge over Ji So-Yun.
Community Shield played in women’s football for the first time in 12 years. He is part of a double header at Wembley, against the backdrop of the men’s season between Premier League champions Liverpool and FA Cup winner Arsenal later on Saturday.
While the men’s season was able to resume in June after a 100-day stoppage, the women’s league fell and Chelsea was declared champion in a points-per-game calculation before City.
Chelsea also won the League Cup on 29 February, the last day of women’s competition in England before the coronavirus epidemic closed the sport.
The new WSL season is due to start next weekend and the incomplete 2019-20 FA Cup is not yet finished with City and Chelsea in the quarter-finals.
