Chelsea captain Reece James outlines his Champions League target after his return

Reece James is aiming to return Chelsea to the Champions League after betting on his return against Nottingham Forest.

James made an instant impact on his return by helping Chelsea to a dramatic 3-2 win at the City Ground on Sunday to boost their hopes of European qualification.

After five months out with a hamstring injury, James came off the bench and took just 3 minutes to set up Nicolas Jackson with a precise cross from the right.

The win puts Chelsea in seventh place in the table, as they aim to qualify for the Europa League at the end of a difficult season.

But James is already aiming up and says Chelsea want to return to the Champions League.

“We’re learning every day,” James told Chelsea TV.

“We’re still young and we had a few days off in the season, but overall we’ve made a step forward and we’re going strong towards the end of the season.

“Europe is one of the highest levels of club football and we are one of the biggest football clubs, so we must strive every season to knock on the door of the Champions League. That is the objective.

James was excited to return after a frustrating period.

“It’s so wonderful to be back there!” said James.

“It’s been five long months since I played. I’ve been waiting for this comeback for so long, so I’m pleased to be back today and help the team.

“In fact, it’s the first time I’ve played this year. I was determined to come back before the end of the season, to have compatibility to help the team and I’m pleased that I was able to do that. “Do that today.

“It’s been a slow process for me to get back to this point. Initially, we thought it would take about 3 months, so being out for almost five months was hard to handle in my head.

“I’ve had long days but it’s part of the process. Now I’m satisfied to regain compatibility and be able to help the team.

“I’m really pleased to have played my part in the win and of course I’m really happy to be able to help Nicolas. The cross is one of my strengths, I had the opportunity to put it on a plate to Nicolás and a player. Because of his quality, he was going to score.

“It’s a smart win for us and, little by little, we’re finding our feet. We’re back to a smart spot and stay consistent week after week.
