Chelsea Cole Palmer wins Premier League Young Player of the Year award

Cole Palmer has been named the Premier League Young Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season.

Chelsea star in the season scoring for Manchester City in the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup, before making a blissful £42. 5m move to Stamford Bridge on the day of the summer move-in deadline.

Given the random nature of the Blues’ transfer deals, some were pessimistic about Palmer’s chances of good luck in West London, but he shone for his new club.

After scoring his first goal in October’s win at Burnley, he has temporarily become one of Chelsea’s brightest names under Mauricio Pochettino with goals ahead of Arsenal, Tottenham and former club City, who were suspended in recent times for the team. . Wild draw 4-4.

Palmer has gone from strength to strength ever since, scoring a hat-trick against Manchester United in April before scoring four goals at home against Everton, adding a “perfect” hat-trick in just an hour later a short time later.

Ahead of Sunday’s top-flight finale against Bournemouth, he boasts a league-record 22 goals and 10 assists in 33 appearances, one for City on the opening weekend.

He has 27 goals and 14 assists in all competitions and trails starter Erling Haaland with five in the Premier League Golden Boot race this season with a game to play after the latter’s recent four goals against Wolves and is preparing to watch Tottenham.

Gareth Southgate presented Palmer with his senior England debut in November and he is expected to be part of the squad for Euro 2024 next week.

Bukayo Saka won the Young Player of the Year awards season after Phil Foden won the honor in the past two years.

Chelsea’s last winner, Eden Hazard, was in 2014. Scott Parker won the gong in 2004, having spent part of the first part of that season at Charlton.

This year, Palmer has former City teammates Haaland and Foden and Arsenal duo Saka and William Saliba in the spotlight, with Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Maneoo also nominated along with Tottenham full-back Destiny Udogie and Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

The award was presented through a panel of football experts combined with a vote from the general public, which lasted until Monday.

Palmer was also nominated for the Premier League Player of the Season award, along with Haaland, Foden, Isak, Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Virgil van Dijk and Ollie Watkins. The winner is expected to be shown on Saturday.

The 22-year-old has already won Chelsea’s Player of the Season and Player of the Season awards this season, as well as winning Premier League Player of the Month and Goal of the Month in April. Remarkably, he is the first Chelsea player since Hazard in 2018 to win the Player of the Month award.

Palmer was also nominated for the PFA Premier League Player of the Year award on Thursday, while Foden later won the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year award.
