Chelsea are reportedly “considering” a new contract for Conor Gallagher after having held talks with Aston Villa about a potential transfer deal.
Gallagher’s long career has long been dubious and the Blues were thought to be looking to get rid of the midfielder, much to the anger and confusion of fans.
The English star was one of Chelsea’s most productive players last season, but his contract expires at the end of next season with Tottenham and Aston Villa heavily connected to him.
Chelsea’s hierarchy, BlueCo, has taken a turn and is actively contemplating a change of position, The Guardian reported.
It comes after the Blues held informal talks with Villa about a trade deal for Gallagher, which would let Jhon Duran through.
As a result of those discussions, Chelsea are now “open” to securing Gallagher’s long-term if talks with the player about a contract extension resume.
Gallagher has reportedly been “lukewarm” at the idea of being in a transfer deal with Chelsea to sign the Villa Durán star.
Meanwhile, there have been suggestions that Gallagher suits the taste of play used through Chelsea’s new head coach Enzo Maresca.
That’s one of the reasons why Gallagher’s scenario remains very unpredictable and it’s vital to note that it may still sell this summer at the right price.
Chelsea, who are desperate for Gallagher’s departure with a flexible move next summer, are also under monetary pressure and want to locate a “secret magic sum” to comply with benefits and sustainability (PSR) regulations.
Clubs under pressure from PSR could prioritise selling academy graduates such as Gallagher as they are a natural benefit to their balance sheet.
Wayne Bridge believes that would be a big mistake, and the former Chelsea star has suggested his former club stick with Gallagher at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s a bit of a mess there [at Chelsea],” Bridge said. “The fact that Conor Gallagher is at the combine shows that when I say ‘mess’ it’s a disaster, because it’s probably his most productive player moment after Cole Palmer. “
