Women’s Super League champions Chelsea FC have announced a massive call for Sam Kerr’s career at the club in an extravagant social media farce.
Fans feared the worst when Chelsea released an emotional video of Kerr, with the caption: “A message from @SamanthaKerr20. . . “
Kerr, pensive, sat in front of the camera, solemnly, as she began to reflect on her time at the club, admitting that she “didn’t know how to have that verbal exchange with you. “
“After 4 years, it’s hard to sum up how I feel,” she began.
“My time at Chelsea is unforgettable. Many wonderful memories, lifelong dreams, trophies won.
“What will stay with me the most will be the memories shared with the fans and my teammates. “
The fans were quick to react, incredulous at the fact that the club would let their star striker go, especially without saying goodbye.
“We didn’t even say goodbye to him, you can’t do that at Chelsea,” one fan pleaded.
“What a waste and what a sadness that the club does not renew him. A player of such quality,” said another.
Soon after, the video turned out to be nothing more than a blatant joke, in which Chelsea and Kerr revealed that she had signed on for two more seasons to remain in West London until 2026.
The striker added in the comments: “Who thought I was leaving?”
Fans expressed relief but remained divided on whether they wanted to see a coup on social media.
“The administrators do that again,” one of them commented bluntly.
“The farce of the century because, well, they gave it to us,” said another.
“Fair play with the media team. Many of us were lied to,” added a third.
The Blues then shared a snippet of an interview with Kerr for an episode of We Are Chelsea where she shows the behind-the-scenes of the video.
She admitted that she “couldn’t help but laugh” as she watched the fake video film.
Kerr signed for Chelsea in 2020 and signed a contract extension at the end of 2021 that kept her at the club until the end of the 2023-24 season.
During her time at Stamford Bridge, she won Women’s Super League titles, 3 Women’s FA Cups, two FA Women’s League Cups and one FA Women’s Community Shield.
The 30-year-old has been out of action since January, when she had to undergo season-ending surgery after suffering an ACL injury at an educational camp in Morocco.
