Brentford manager Thomas Frank admits that Neal Maupay brings other people and “excites” him ahead of Chelsea at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Maupay has earned an infamous reputation for his antics on the pitch and Chelsea may be the last team to suffer his mind games on Saturday.
Settlement trader Maupay has been at odds with Tottenham’s James Maddison and Manchester City’s Kyle Walker this season.
Maupay goaded Maddison by copying his darts birthday party and accused him of raising Walker’s children in an on-court brawl, allegedly mocking his infidelity, while also being involved in a confrontation with West Ham’s Kevin Nolan.
Speaking ahead of Brentford’s clash with Chelsea, Frank was asked about Maupay “putting other people in his place” and said: “It’s great to talk about Neal because he’s been there for us.
“When he got here, he hadn’t scored a goal in a long time. So what he’s done to be where he is today is incredible. It deserves a lot of praise.
“I know there’s a lot of talk [about his antics] and I understand why it’s a good question and anything you want to comment on.
“What I want is for each and every player to be different. They want to find their own path in what motivates them and makes them successful. I’m a company at that.
“So it’s my duty to advise them sometimes. Of course, I talked to Neal about it. I’ll keep it to myself, but he has to do what he thinks is important.
West Ham’s Michail Antonio believes Maupay is in danger of being beaten by his antics and has called him “the most hated user on the pitch”.
French striker Maupay, 27, spoke to Sport Bible about his feud with Maddison this week, saying: “The way he was offended, it was funny.
“It would have been better if we had won. But in their standing in front of their fans, all their players were goats. Just by throwing a dart, I toasted to 11 players.
“It’s so simple. It’s crazy how simple it is, but I’m just having fun, for me it’s fun. Football is a game and I try to have fun. “
