NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Joao Félix could spring a surprise by returning to Chelsea after his deal to sign Samu Omorodion from Atlético Madrid fell through.
Omorodion has been due to move to Stamford Bridge for weeks now, after the two clubs agreed on a £34. 5million transfer.
With Conor Gallagher reportedly swapping west London for Madrid for a similar fee, many fans want the England foreigner to remain at his boyhood club.
But everything threatened to fall apart, as on Sunday night it reported that the deal for Omorodion was already closed, and The Athletic mentioned the problems related to the young striker’s contract.
As a result, Atlético’s deals for Gallagher and Manchester City striker Julián Álvarez are now in jeopardy and may fall apart.
The La Liga giants will pay £81million for Argentine superstar Alvarez, who leaves the Etihad after just two seasons to get more regular playing time as a centre-forward.
But Atlético have to sell to secure any of the transfers and Chelsea cannot, as the deal with Gallagher falls apart, so the two clubs are looking for a solution just days before the start of the new Premier League season. .
To that end, Félix is reported to be in talks between the two parties and the player’s agent Jorge Mendes, which could see the striker return to Les Bleus after an unfortunate loan spell there.
The Portuguese star signed for Chelsea for six months in the second part of the 2022/23 season when they were controlled by Graham Potter, but it did not go as planned.
He was sent off on his debut and scored only 4 goals in 20 appearances, leaving his purchase option unused.
It has become clear this summer that the 24-year-old is part of Atletico’s plans, but his move has been problematic, partly due to his salary, which is said to be around £99,000 a week.
To this day, Felix remains one of the greatest footballers in history, and the €127. 2m (£108. 8m) Atletico paid Benfica for him puts him fifth on the all-time list.
