Kieran McKenna has given Chelsea the green light to improve their strategy, which could see the Ipswich manager update Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.
The Northern Irishman is passionate about the task and happy that Les Bleus have included him in their list of candidates. Ipswich need McKenna to stay and will offer the 38-year-old a new contract, despite his current contract. until 2027.
Pochettino left Chelsea by mutual agreement on Tuesday, halfway through his two-year contract. The former Tottenham manager led Chelsea to sixth place, securing European football, but the Blues’ owners still saw it as an underperformer.
Chelsea went straight into the search for a sixth manager in two years, and McKenna has emerged as one of the leading candidates.
The former Manchester United assistant has led Ipswich to back-to-back promotions, leading the Tractor Boys from League One to the Premier League, and believes he is in a position to move to the next level of his career.
It is believed that Ipswich can secure the refund of more than £4 million, which would not deter Chelsea from any prosecution. Brighton also knew McKenna as a key target to upgrade the now-deceased Roberto De Zerbi.
McKenna won the League Managers Association’s Manager of the Year award this week, highlighting his work to bring the club back to the top level for the first time in 22 years.
