Chelsea learns of Profit’s fate

It established that Chelsea had not breached the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules after Nottingham Forest and Everton were accused.

Forest and Everton were the only two of the 20 Premier League clubs who have been referred to an independent commission to determine whether they will be found guilty of breaching the permitted Profitability and Sustainability thresholds.

A read: “Everton FC and Nottingham Forest FC have shown the Premier League that they are, in short, one of the League’s Rules of Profitability and Sustainability (PSR). This is due to losses suffered above the allowable thresholds for the evaluation era that ends in the 2022/23 season.

“In accordance with Premier League rules, both instances have been referred to the chairman of the Judicial Panel, who will appoint separate committees for appropriate sanction.

“Commissions are independent of the Premier League and member clubs. The proceedings are heard in private with the Commissions’ final decisions made public on the Premier League’s website. The League will make no further comment until that time.”

One club said: “Everton Football Club recognises the Premier League’s decision to refer a breach of Benefits and Sustainability (PSR) regulations for the assessment era ending with the 2022/23 season to an independent committee of the Premier League.

“This relates to a period which covers seasons 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23. It therefore includes financial periods (2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22) for which the Club has already received a 10-point sanction. The Club is currently appealing that sanction.

“The Premier League has no rules that save a club from being sanctioned for alleged monetary misconduct in years in which they have already been sanctioned, unlike other governing bodies, including the EFL. As a result, and due to the Premier’s new commitment League with addressing those issues ‘in-season’ – the Club is in a position where it does not yet have the option to submit a PSR calculation which remains subject to change, pending the outcome of the appeal.

“The Club must now defend another Premier League complaint which includes the very same financial periods for which it has already been sanctioned, before that appeal has even been heard. The Club takes the view that this results from a clear deficiency in the Premier League’s rules.

“Everton can assure its fans that it will continue to defend its position on the existing appeal and, if it does, on any long-term commission, and that the effect on fans will be reflected as part of this process. “.

A message from the club read: “Nottingham Forest takes note of the Premier League’s confirmation that the club has today been charged with breaching the league’s profitability and sustainability rules.

“The club intends to continue to co-operate with the Premier League in this matter and is confident of a swift and fair resolution. “

As The Athletic reported, “All clubs were due to submit their accounts for 2022-23 by December 31, rather than March as they did in the past, with subsequent breaches and fees showing 14 days later.

“The league has set May 24 as the deadline for any appeals after the end of the season on May 19. This date precedes the league’s annual general meeting. “
