It would be simple to think that Chelsea’s summer moving activity would lead them to a very quiet January.
But recent effects have gone in Lampard’s frank direction: back-to-back losses to Everton and Wolves mean Chelsea are in seventh place.
There was also a slight sadness in some of the signatures that arrived a few months ago. Timo Werner did not fire all the cylinders as expected and Kai Havertz did not stabilize despite his talent.
Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy, however, had a brighter start to the season.
And that leaves January, with Declan Rice the call dominating the headlines.

So far, Rice has worn 8 shirts for England and 41 for West Ham.
According to Football. London, Rice would have a smart chance of keeping his beloved 41 shirt, as it is a rare number used by Chelsea first-team players.
Number five is worn by Jorginho and number eight is worn by Ross Barkley, who, however, is on loan at Aston Villa with his long pending term.
What about Chelsea’s own boss? Lampard remained shy about his plans and said so before the West Ham game.
“First, I don’t know about January,” he says.
