Chelsea booked their place in the Carabao Cup semi-final thanks to the fallout after Mykhailo Mudryk’s stoppage-time equaliser saved Newcastle’s 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Mudryk headed home after a mistake by Kieran Trippier just as Eddie Howe looked to have done enough to put the hosts ahead, who struggled to create for much of the game.
Earlier, Callum Wilson had given the visitors a lead on the counter-attack in the first half. But when the game went to penalties, Trippier was at fault again, firing wide from 12 yards before Matt Ritchie saw the critical shot saved by goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. to allow Chelsea through.
