Chelsea-Preston LIVE!
Chelsea scored three times in 11 minutes in the second half to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-0 win over Preston at Stamford Bridge. A frustrating move by Mauricio Pochettino, in which he monopolised the ball in the first half but made few openings, erupted thirteen minutes after the break with Armando Broja heading in his second goal of the season after a cross from Malo Gusto.
Broja could and perhaps deserved to have scored two, receiving a ball from Mudryk and directing an almost identical header an inch over Woodman’s crossbar, as Chelsea finally asserted their best class. This was followed by two free throws, the first by the bench. Thiago Silva, who headed in from Cole Palmer’s corner, and then some others when Raheem Sterling fired a free-kick past goalkeeper Freddie Woodman’s head, as Preston’s full defensive functionality in the first half faded into memory.
Sterling’s purpose to turn the 3 into a peach, before a ridiculously long VAR review showed a quarter from Fernandez at the end, while hitting just a metre at the end, a final reminder of the abyss alongside Ryan Lowe, who sits 14th in the championship. .
GOAL! Fernandez fourth place after VAR control
GOAL! Sterling: the result beyond doubt
GOAL! Silva doubles the lead
GOAL! Broja leads Chelsea

Mykhailo Mudryk – 4
Mudryk had virtually no influence on the match, wasting his duels down the left flank and being sent off in the 61st minute.
Armando Broja-7
At first, the striker struggled to identify himself, but he scored a well-deserved header for himself and Chelsea. He then hit the crossbar with the same effort and circled Freddie Woodman just after arriving alive.

It ended up being a night for Chelsea as the substitutes helped put the game back on track.
They are still a team that does very well when things are going well but struggles to compete in difficult moments. A bad first half but a second one.
19:27 , Matt Verri
And then the final whistle.
Chelsea were absent for almost an hour but managed to make it to the fourth round.
A good start to 2024 for the Blues.
19:24, Matt Verri
90 6 mins: Madueke in all kinds of inside the box.
With his left foot, he took his time before, despite everything, getting his shot right. It takes too long. Obstructed.
19:22, Matt Verri
90, four minutes: Madueke throws the ball back, Washington chases it and Chelsea takes a corner.
Taken by surprise, Madueke attempted to scan the signature. Another corner.
19:19, Matt Verri
90 1 mins: Golding for Chelsea and scores!
Madueke’s shot was saved and fell to Golding from six yards, but he sent a tame effort straight to Woodman.
19:18, Matt Verri
90 minutes: Eight more minutes.
Of course, that’s precisely what Preston wanted to hear. . .
19:15, Matt Verri
After all that, it’s been given!
Simple and outstanding finish.
19:15, Matt Verri
Long, VAR control. Just what we all wanted.
They’re not sure if this is offside… it’s very tight.
19:13, Matt Verri
85 mins: Fernandez converts the ball into an empty net, the flag is raised.
Sterling and Caicedo also had no chance to shoot before. . . in spite of everything, he charmed Fernandez at the far post.
19:09, Matt Verri
Armando Broja and Cole Palmer were kicked out, but they were laughing and wanted to stay.
Deivid Washington will make his second appearance for Chelsea.
19:08 , Matt Verri
80 mins: Madueke catches the shot well and whistles over the crossbar.
Sterling and Fernandez almost opened up Preston, he crashed for a throw-in. Some tired legs from Preston now.
19:05, Matt Verri
77 min: Madueke from 25 yards, it’s a shot that misses completely. . . An almost excellent hub!
Onto Washington’s head, but he can’t direct it at goal.
19:03, Matt Verri
76 mins: Broja and Palmer are out, Gallagher and Washington are available for the Blues.
You think Chelsea have more targets if they keep pushing.
19:02, Matt Verri
74 mins: Preston’s corner, passes everyone in the box.
Back in the middle, Caicedo is there to clear it with a motorcycle kick. Of course.
18:59, Matt Verri
71 minutes: Now it can be any result.
Broja cleared, went around the goalkeeper and his shot went off the line.
Sterling then tries his luck from distance, shot deflected into the side-netting.
18:57 , Matt Verri
Raheem Sterling takes a superb free-kick to kill Preston. Chelsea are now on their way to victory.
That’s a carbon copy of his goal at Newcastle in November.
18:56 , Matt Verri
Whiteman brings down Palmer right on the edge of the area. Yellow card.
Sterling takes. . . Sterling scores!
Brilliant free-kick, cut out from the most sensible corner. Woodman doesn’t come close at all.
18:55 , Matt Verri
Thiago Silva scores with a header from a corner in what may be his first touch.
Chelsea’s quality has shown regardless, but they will want to score points for the demanding situations ahead.
18:53, Matt Verri
Madueke seems to have created for the shot, but it is denied for a corner.
And it’s 2-0!
That does. Hitting close to the post, Silva allowed a clear run and headed home.
18:51, Matt Verri
64 minutes: Sterling walks into the box, takes a while to shoot. . . Too much.
Finally, he hit a red well and Preston was able to push the ball away.
18:49, Matt Verri
Chelsea didn’t start the half well but have found a moment of quality, Gusto in-swinging cross is headed in by Armando Broja goal. Both the striker and Chelsea needed that.
Noni Madueke and Thiago Silva come on, Mauricio Pochettino is not at risk.
18:48, Matt Verri
60 minutes: And you’ve got a moment left!
This time Mudryk puts the ball in, Broja beats Woodman but goes over the crossbar.
Chelsea make their first substitution: Silva replaces Gilchrist. Madueke comes on for Mudryk.
18:45, Matt Verri
Chelsea takes the lead!
They needed it. Gusto cut in with his right foot, crossed through the middle and Broja headed into the far corner.
18:44 , Matt Verri
56 minutes: Osmajic is down and will need treatment.
Boos from the Chelsea fans, that nothing was wrong with him. It’s going to keep going.
18:41, Matt Verri
53 mins: Mainly Chelsea, as Sterling injects a bit of rhythm into his game. He arrives at the signing and wins a corner.
Taken short, pulled back to Disasi and he blasts an effort over the bar.
18:38, Matt Verri
51 mins: Broja and Sterling replaced positions, with Broja pulling away.
He’s had a chance to impress this evening – barely had a kick.
18:36, Matt Verri
48 mins: I don’t know what Pochettino said at half-time, but Chelsea don’t look any better.
Preston is comfortable on the ball and is a risk in the tricky areas. Miller advances to the left, Caicedo there to draw a blank.
However, Preston again suffers a terrible fainting. Browne shoots wide.
18:33, Matt Verri
Second-half is up and running.
18:25 , Matt Verri
Maybe too cool from Cole Palmer…
CLOSE from Cole Palmer! Great ball, great touch, just lacking the finish…#CHEPNE pic.twitter.com/qLpyfnT6Zh

Mauricio Pochettino was furious at half-time and went down the tunnel before the whistle.
It’s 0-0 against Preston and they’re capable of causing an upset.
Chelsea have been poor.
18:17 , Matt Verri
And that’s half-time.
Preston can be very happy with his efforts at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had a ten-minute era where they started creating chances, but other than that, the Blues were miserable.
18:15, Matt Verri
44 mins: It’s mediocre from Chelsea: Preston spends a lot of time on the ball.
Gusto then gives away a needless free-kick out wide, up come the Preston centre-backs.
18:12, Matt Verri
42 mins: Sterling continues to try to beat Millar away from home. . . It’s working.
There is no area as it goes to the baseline, the cross into the box comes straight out of play.
18:10, Matt Verri
There are arguments to say that Gilchrist has been Chelsea’s player so far.
That’s to his credit, but you’d expect more from some of his teammates.
18:09, Matt Verri
38 mins: Oh my God, Chelsea under pressure.
Preston’s corner was not cleared by Les Bleus, the ball came back and the visitors had numbers at the far post. I’ve done more.
Preston looks better right now!
18:07, Matt Verri
36 mins: Weak from Broja, he ignored the ball when Chelsea would have had to break it if they had had it.
On the other end of the line, Osmajic explains how to do it. He wins a throw-in for his team.
18:06 , Matt Verri
Alfie Gilchrist has been gambling so far, creating a great chance and managing a very damaging 1-on-1.
Chants of “Alfie Gilchrist, He’s One of Us,” from Matthew Harding End.
18:03, Matt Verri
32 min: Keane with a great midfield, sends a pass to Millar.
He seems to have beaten Gilchrist, but the Chelsea defender returns to attack and block the cross.
18:01 , Matt Verri
Preston gives Chelsea a game.
They’ve been one of the worst groups in the league lately, but the old-school low-blocking, long-pass is Chelsea’s kryptonite.
17:59, Matt Verri
28 mins: Sterling gets in behind down the right, after a really nice ball from Palmer.
The relief is a smart solution, but the punt attempt suits Fernandez perfectly. Six meters away, no markings. . . head straight to Woodman.
17:58, Matt Verri
27 mins: Colwill is caught, a long ball is put in and Osmajic is missed.
Close angle, still passes towards the goal and Petrovic can comfortably pass to save.
17:57 , Matt Verri
26 mins: A couple of hopeful balls from Fernandez, to no avail.
The Preston fans are making a lot of noise and are enjoying their trip to London more and more as the game progresses.
17:55, Matt Verri
Cole Palmer with a run, a throw-in but then missed the goal when it looked easier to score.
He laughs; It doesn’t look like the missed opportunity is going to be for a player brimming with confidence.
17:52 , Matt Verri
22 mins: Should be 1-0!
Lovely ball over the top from Fernandez, Palmer with the run in behind.
Takes it down perfectly, stands still and looks to scoop the ball over Woodman. Rolls wide.
17:52, Matt Verri
Raheem Sterling made Chelsea’s first meaningful attempt after a move by Alfie Gilchrist.
Sterling squandered a second chance moments later, but Will Keane was also shot on purpose for Preston.
17:51, Matt Verri
20 mins: Climbs the edge of Preston’s box, the ball falls to Sterling and his shot is returned for a corner.
Palmer took that, poor delivery and smashed it close to the post.
17:49, Matt Verri
18 mins: First chance of the match and it’s a smart form for Chelsea.
Hughes loses the ball and the Blues have it for the first time, when Gilchrist runs into the box.
He returns it to Sterling’s track, who does it better. The shot deflected upwards and was gently claimed by Woodman.
In the end, Keane forced Petrovic into a meek save with a tame shot from distance.
17:47 , Matt Verri
16 mins: Preston gains confidence and moves many forward.
Ball swung into the middle, not convincing from Chelsea but they just about scramble it away.
17:46, Matt Verri
6,000 enthusiasts outside Stamford Bridge for Preston dominate the noise.
They are having a great day out despite minimal goalmouth action at either end.
17:45, Matt Verri
14 mins: Sterling tries to beat Millar, loses the ball and then commits the foul when the Preston boy turns nicely.
Already get the feeling this could be a frustrating evening for Chelsea.
17:42, Matt Verri
11 minutes: Millar moves the ball left for Preston, who is full of confidence.
The ball went into the box, but it was too deep and Guston was able to get it off his head for a throw-in.
17:39 , Matt Verri
8 mins: Clear plan for Chelsea to go down their right, Sterling with a couple of bright runs early on.
Preston relatively comfortable in defence though – they’re sitting back and giving Chelsea no space.
17:36, Matt Verri
5 mins: Chelsea seeing pretty much all of the ball, as we expected, but you feel there will be chances on the counter for Preston.
Les Bleus still have to do with their possession, a mass of red shirts in front of them.
17:33, Matt Verri
2 mins: This is Gilchrist at right-back in his first start for Chelsea, with Guston on the left.
Preston with a first chance to break, Chelsea a little exposed, but Colwill intercepts the pass off the line.
17:31, Matt Verri
A huge crowd of surfers showed up at Stamford Bridge for Gianluca Vialli as Chelsea announcer Lee Parker paid a glorious, emotional tribute to the wonderful man.
It is exactly one year to the day since his passing.
17:31, Matt Verri
We are operational at Stamford Bridge.
17:29, Matt Verri
They’re on the pitch at Stamford Bridge and they’ve already shaken hands.
Kick-off coming up in just a couple of minutes.

Ryan Lowe infuriated Preston enthusiasts when he said this game was the least of their worries, saying league games were more important.
Unsurprisingly, Preston’s boss has retracted those comments.
Lowe said: “It’s definitely not the least of my worries. I apologise if anyone’s taken it in a different way, it definitely wasn’t meant like that.
“I’m pleased that our enthusiasts are coming back there, more than 6,000. They will do it in gigantic numbers by train, by bus. I know there are a lot of buses.
“We want to send our fans home happy as well. We want them to go and enjoy their day because it’s not every week you go and play a massive club like Chelsea.”
17:17, Matt Verri
Brighton and Bournemouth were scared at the 3pm kick-off but managed to seal their position in the fourth FA Cup path.
Burnley are the Premier League side that have been eliminated from the festival so far, following their narrow defeat to Tottenham last night.
17:12, Matt Verri
RB Leipzig have confirmed that Timo Werner is in talks over a move to another club as Tottenham appear to close in on a shock loan deal for the former Chelsea striker.
Surprise reports first surfaced in Germany on Saturday morning, claiming that Spurs were close to signing the 27-year-old until the end of the season.
Talks between the two clubs are already said to be at a complex stage, with claims that Werner is due to travel to London on Sunday to finalize his return to the Premier League after just a year and a half away.
Today it turns out that Leipzig has already shown all the negotiations.
“Timo Werner is not in the squad for today’s friendly because he is in talks with another club,” Leipzig said in an update posted on their official social media channels.
17:08, Matt Verri
Nicolas Jackson is playing for the Africa Cup of Nations and could be out for more than a month if Senegal manage to reach the final.
It’s a great possibility for Armando Broja to come and be part of the team more regularly.
The homegrown striker has performed parts of his game well but looks short of confidence in front of goal.
17:01, Matt Verri
“It’s a big festival for us and we need to make sure we go through [to the next round],” said the Chelsea manager.
“We selected a strong team today that we are capable of going through to the next round, but we know we will have to do our best to get there because Preston will make it very difficult for us. “
16:54, Matt Verri
It’s going to be an evening for Alfie Gilchrist!

It was just one win in five games for Preston, which dropped to 14th in the league.
Tonight they named a team, a full week before their next league game, when they host Bristol City.
16:40, Matt Verri
Alfie Gilchrist will be his first game for Chelsea to fulfil the dream of his formative years against Preston.
The 20-year-old defender grew up supporting Chelsea and earned his spot in two substitute appearances against Luton and Crystal Palace. He starts right away.
Academy stars Michael Golding and Dylan Williams are among the substitutes, while Chelsea are down to 10 players, and Ian Maatsen barely has enough support for the bench.
Christopher Nkunku is in danger in the squad after Mauricio Pochettino spoke of fitness problems.

Mauricio Pochettino says it’s up to Conor Gallagher to make sure he stays at Chelsea until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge despite starting every Premier League match for which he has been available this season.
With just 18 months left on his current contract, his long-term is certain, with Tottenham and West Ham looking interested over the summer.
Asked if he could make sure Chelsea wouldn’t sell Gallagher in January, manager Pochettino replied: “Listen, I can’t say for sure I’ll be here or anything else!
“Listen, in football other things can happen and it all depends on the club and the players. Only the player and the club can guarantee it, the player more than the club because the player has a year and a bit more and can stay.
“He can say, ‘yes, I’m going to stay because my manager can let me stay and be here’ and then the club has to negotiate, as always, to make the decision for the club and the team. “

Ivan Toney will leave Brentford in the January transfer window, manager Thomas Frank has insisted.
Players such as Arsenal and Chelsea are in long-term interest in signing Toney, who is due to face Nottingham Forest on January 20 after his eight-month gambling ban ends.
Brentford need between £80 and £100 million for the English striker and no official offer has yet been received.
“The very short answer: yes”, Frank replied when asked whether Toney will stay at Brentford this month. “He is a Brentford player; he is here. Clearly we miss a few offensive players; I can’t see why we would sell him, and I would love to have him for a longer time.
“If I can ever pitch [his sale], and it’s not for me to say yes or no, it’s Phil [Giles, director of football] or Matthew [Benham, owner], then it has to be at a price. . . Then he’ll stay here.
15:55, Matt Verri
Mauricio Pochettino says Noni Madueke, in top form, needed his mentality to become a full-fledged Chelsea player.
A penalty for the home win over Crystal Palace was followed by a superb goal in Luton on Madueke’s second start to the Premier League season.
But Pochettino admits that, first and foremost, he overlooked Madueke as he struggled to show the mentality and behaviour needed to succeed at this level.
He said: “I’m very happy, it’s taken him almost six months to achieve what we expected from him. The players have to do it and he’s improving a lot. His behavior now and how he’s committed to himself first. ” , and with the rest of the club’s ideas.
“He has the potential and the ability he needs to get things done and achieve them in the future if he wants to succeed.
“It’s the platform for everyone and then it’s about being okay in your brain and being consistent in how we behave. “

Armando Broja hopes to rediscover his goalscoring touch this month to show Chelsea why they don’t want to sign the striker.
The 22-year-old will most likely make his second consecutive start tonight as Blues hosts Preston.
As Nicolas Jackson heads to the African Cup of Nations, Broja is in a position to carve out a place in the team and have a chance to prove his worth to Mauricio Pochettino.
Jackson could miss up to seven matches if Senegal reach the AFCON Final and, while Christopher Nkunku can also play through the middle, Broja is the only player in the Chelsea squad with the traditional characteristics of a target man.

Preston hope to have Jack Whatmough back from injury – the defender came off in the defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the end of December.
However, a calf challenge is expected to keep Robbie Brady out of the game.

Chelsea’s absentee list has stretched into double figures as they prepare to host Preston in the FA Cup
Benoit Badiashile is still absent after missing the game against Luton last weekend and is still in the “reconditioning phase”.
Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Robert Sanchez, Marc Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu and Romeo Lavia will also miss the game at Stamford Bridge tonight.
Thiago Silva may be resting in the background, but Ian Maatsen can start working despite ongoing talks with Borussia Dortmund about a possible transfer. Alfie Gilchrist represents a viable option after being promoted from the academy.
Cole Palmer, who is fit, can continue, Armando Broja will update Nicolas Jackson, who plays in the Africa Cup of Nations, and Raheem Sterling is pushing to be called up to the starting lineup.
Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): Petrovic; Gusto, Disasi, Colwill, Maatsen; Caicedo, Gallagher; Palmer, Mudryk, Sterling; Broja
