Aston Villa will compete with Tottenham to sign Conor Gallagher, and Chelsea are keen to ask for around £50m for the English midfielder.
Villa is determined to his team ahead of next season’s Champions League and knows Gallagher as a key target.
Villa manager Unai Emery is a big fan of Gallagher’s talent and believes the 24-year-old can bring power and stability to his team’s midfield.
Tottenham have also maintained a keen interest in Gallagher, but Villa could now make the first move for the former Crystal Palace loanee.
Gallagher seems satisfied at Chelsea, but he has not been able to sign a new contract with the Blues either.
His current contract expires next summer and Chelsea need to lose him with a flexible move in 12 months’ time.
Chelsea Gallagher in a similar category to Mason Mount, who was sold to Manchester United for £55m last summer.
However, this window of change could well lead to a decrease in fees across the board, as all clubs largely follow Premier League and European spending regulations.
Selling the homegrown player would also increase Chelsea’s Premier League profit and sustainability figures. Sales from local players count as a natural benefit in those records.
Gallagher fueled Chelsea’s resurgence at the end of the season under Mauricio Pochettino, when the Blues rose from 11th in April to 6th in the Premier League.
Pochettino used Gallagher at the base of his midfield in a double pivot to help Les Bleus win five league games in the rotation.
Gallagher now has a good chance of playing a role for England at the fast-approaching European Championship in Germany.
