Chelsea to raise up to £14m in transfer clauses and loan deals

Chelsea will raise between £11m and £14m ($14. 1m to $12. 8m) from loan and transfer clause additions this season.

Kepa Arrizabalaga’s combined loan to Real Madrid and Eden Hazard’s initial £89m transfer to the Spanish club in 2019 contributed just under £10m to that figure, after Carlo Ancelotti’s side reached the Champions League final this season. Chelsea benefited from the sale of Hazard despite the Belgian’s retirement from football last October.

Borussia Dortmund also reached the Champions League final and saw Chelsea take advantage of a clause in Ian Maatsen’s loan contract to the German club, who agreed a deal in January after the Dutchman made only three starts under Mauricio Pochettino.

Dortmund lost the final 2-0 to Madrid at Wembley, with Maatsen giving the ball to Jude Bellingham before Vinicius Junior’s goal sealed the game in the 83rd minute. Maatsen, however, has earned plaudits for his six-month stay in the Bundesliga and has a £35m clause in the new Chelsea contract he signed just before going on loan.

Armando Broja’s failed loan to Fulham also generated another £4m due to his lack of time. The 22-year-old has made just 8 appearances as a substitute for Fulham after leaving Chelsea in January.

The injection of more budget will be welcomed at Chelsea, especially in light of the club’s latest accounts, published in April. These showed that Chelsea had the operating loss in the Premier League (-£249 million) and the second salary bill (£404 million) for the reference era covering the 2022-23 season.

The accounts also showed Chelsea barely complied with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability (PSR) regulations by collecting a £76. 5 million profit from the sale of the two Stamford Bridge hotels to a sister company owned by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
