Chelsea have reportedly entered the race for Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes, who would be keen to reunite with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United.
The Blues are in a much better position than they have been in the last two seasons. After finishing 12th two seasons ago and only recovering from mid-table to finish sixth last season, they are fourth in the Premier League of late.
Questions have been raised about their defence, however, as the three most level-headed, as well as fifth and seventh in the league, have better defensive records than Chelsea.
The left-back turns out to be a short-lived precedent, and insider Simon Phillips reports that PSG’s Mendes is a call-up that has been added to the mix.
Chelsea will give United, who have Mendes on their radar amid their own preference to strengthen their left-back options, a feast.
The latest report suggested Mendes, who played under United boss Amorim at Sporting CP, is ‘very interested’ in reuniting with the manager.
A move to Chelsea would be a surprise for the Red Devils coach as he attempts to retrain the left-back.

Chelsea’s left-back responsibilities have been shared by a few players this season.
Marc Cucurella and Renato Veiga are the main options, while Reece James has also played with them, suggesting that neither of those men are the definitive option for Enzo Maresca.
Although Mendes, 22, has not played every game at his disposal, only five Ligue 1 goals have been conceded through PSG when he was in the team, compared to nine when he was not.
As such, it turns out that he would be a useful asset to present to the Chelsea team, as he would indeed help the defence.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United are not in a “desperate situation” despite Chelsea positioning themselves to land Kobbie Mainoo if he doesn’t pen a new deal at the club.
Cole Palmer is an advocate of signing the midfielder and posted a message on Instagram asking if Mainoo would be a smart move for the Blues.
Meanwhile, TEAMtalk is aware that Joao Felix could be willing to leave Chelsea despite joining the club permanently this summer.
Sources say he would possibly feel the desire to revive his career elsewhere.
TEAMtalk sources also state that Crystal Palace have no intention of selling Marc Guehi, with Chelsea hoping to take him back to the club he started his professional career at.
