Gross arrives in Gelsenkirchen to sign for a club behind the Bundesliga, with no win in his first thirteen games of the season and no win in 29 in the league dating back to January 2020.
“For Schalke 04, the next five months will be true to remain in the Bundesliga,” sports director Jochen Schneider told the Schalke website. “Christian Gross has shown in Germany and England that he can effectively deal with demanding situations like this. the team sends transparently and puts us on the right track with their unwavering expectations. We’re sure of that. “
Gross, who spent a season with rival Schalke at Ruhr, VfL Bochum, his playing days, has been without paintings since February, when he finished his third term at the helm of Saudi club Al-Ahli.
In the past he led Grasshopper Zurich to two Swiss Super League titles, which earned him a season at Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League. He then returned to Switzerland and won the first Swiss flight 4 times as head of Basel, before spending less than a year at the helm of the Bundesliga’s VfB Stuttgart club in 2009.
His first coach as coach of Schalke will be at Hertha Berlin on 2 January.
“We want to be goal-oriented and work towards results,” Gross said. “I want to feel the enthusiasm of the players at all times. We have to have a smart environment in and around the team to succeed again. Give it our all so that together we can achieve our goals. “
Gross is Schalke’s fourth coach in a turbulent season. David Wagner was replaced through Manuel Baum in late September, before Huub Stevens intervened in the club’s last two competitive outings in 2020 following Baum’s dismissal.
