PARIS >> In helmets and protective suits, members of the Notre Dame Cathedral Choir sang medieval Paris for the first time from last year’s devastating fireplace for a special Christmas Eve concert.
Accompanied by a famous cellist and a rented organ, the singers performed under the stained glass windows of the cathedral in the middle of the dark church, which is in the process of moving from a precarious and damaging cleaning operation to a large reconstruction site. The choir planned to bring 20 singers, but for safety reasons they were limited to eight.
The choir members have remained socially est distanced so that they can remove the mask – which is mandatory internal in France to stop the spread of the virus – and sing.
The concert, which includes “Night of Peace” in English and French, “The Hymn of angels” and even “Jingle Bells”, was recorded before this month and aired just before Thursday. The public was not allowed and deserves not to see it. the interior of Notre Dame until at least 2024.
The diocese called it a “highly symbolic concert. . . “emotional and hopeful “and a birthday party of a ” musical legacy dating back to the Middle Ages. “
The Archbishop of Paris, Monsignor Michel Aupetit, celebrated Christmas Eve on Thursday at the Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois church in front of the Louvre Museum instead of Notre Dame.
The Notre-Dame choir offered 60 concerts a year at the cathedral, however, it has been itinerant ever since, moving among other Parisian churches.
The April 2019 chimney fed on the lead ceiling of the cathedral and destroyed its needle, and it wasn’t until this month that the staff nevertheless stabilized the site enough to begin reconstruction.
