Conor Gallagher says Frank Lampard’s legacy drives his quest for English stardom.
The 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder has enjoyed an impressive season at Stamford Bridge following a productive loan spell at Crystal Palace two years ago. Those eye-catching performances through the Eagles earned him a first call-up to England in November 2021 and the following year, Gallagher got his first taste of main-tournament action as part of the Three Lions squad in 2022.
Gallagher has fond memories of watching Chelsea legend Lampard play abroad and in the Premier League and will now be hoping to follow in the footsteps of his 106 decorated caps.
Gallagher, reflecting on his memories of watching the Three Lions on TV as part of a new collaboration with LG OLED TV before this summer, said: “I watched England and the team with Lampard, David Beckham and Steven Gerrard when I was younger.
“Frank is a legend for Chelsea and England; Obviously he has more than a hundred international caps and also a good number of goals. To look up, it’s the best thing for me.
“Back then I didn’t understand a lot of the main points of the games because I was a bit younger, but now that means the world is wearing the England shirt.
“It’s special to build your country and it’s a source of pride for me and my family. I hope I can’t wait to wear this t-shirt a few times.
“It’s huge to motivate the next generation. We have a team that has already achieved a lot. I’m excited for this summer. It’s an honour to play for England and to play in the primaries is incredible. I hope to be able to play my component as well.
“I just need to be part of the team, be there and feel part of it. We have a young and talented squad with a lot of talented players, so it’s an exciting time for England. I’m looking forward. “
Gallagher’s international debut came just four months after England’s appalling penalty shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley. And after a spectacular season at Selhurst Park, he was rewarded with a series of overseas appearances in 2021 and 2022.
Gallagher believes the recent heartbreak of a primary tournament in 2022, in Russia and on London soil, will give England an advantage in Germany, once they face the continent’s best.
He added: “We didn’t win the trophies we thought we could, although they came close a few times, so the next step will be to win a trophy. I think the above reports will help us a lot this summer. “- Just having that experience, betting on important matches, unlike the more sensible countries in football tournaments.
“I think we’ll get it in the next few games and we’re all very excited. “
