Rivers of Steel Arts invited Coral Lambert, a professor of sculpture at Afred University, as a guest artist at the September iron smelting workshops at Carrie’s blast furnaces in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historic Monument is a remnant of what was once a large US steel farm. Steel Works and a remnant of Pittsburgh’s dominance in the 20th century metal industry. Coated with refractory bricks, Carrie 6 and 7 furnaces are incredibly rare examples of pre-World War II iron manufacturing technology. remains a heritage site.
For many years, the site remained dormant and informally attracted artists who began and revitalized the site with public sculptures and graffiti. On site, an artist built an iron oven cooked with coke, where art and the act of casting iron take place spectacularly in the shadow of the historic site, Rivers of Steel Arts celebrates artistic studies by creating opportunities to interpret the region’s past, reinvent its long term and explore a sense of belonging.
During his stay, Lambert produced 14 cast iron components, adding some of his recent series of “crying sculptures”. She will incorporate the molds into new works during her existing gap year. In collaboration with Rivers of Steel Arts staff, it provided workshop commands on manufacturing molds, preparation and more productive practices for steel casting. In addition to sharing an artist’s presentation with workshop participants, he presented recommendations and comments on his projects through offering them the best casting procedure to ensure a successful and safe casting.
Lambert is in a verbal exchange with the Rivers of Steel Metal Arts program to provide opportunities for Alfred’s academics. Inspired by the legacy of high furnace iron manufacturing carries, our academics can participate in educational painting workshops and equipment building reports showing casting paints and how art can be used as an urban renewal tool.
