Crew advance to knockout round with 2-0 win over Red Bulls

LAKE GOOD VIEW, Fla. (AP) Gyasi Zardes and Lucas Zelarayan scored for the Columbus Crew in a 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls that day to secure a place in the eighth round of the MLS is Back tournament.

With a couple of victories to open the World Cup-style tournament, the team secured the top position in their organization with a final game against Atlanta on Tuesday.

Zardes threatened in the 17th minute, but his headbutt went to the net at the most sensible moment. He scored in the 23rd minute for his third goal in two games. It’s the 70th goal of his MLS career.

Pedro Santos almost added purpose for the team from the distance in the 40th minute, but Red Bulls goalkeeper David Jensen threw himself to push the ball to the pole and pull it away from the net.

Zelarayan scored in the first few minutes of the moment. The team signed the Argentine attacking midfielder of the UANL Tigers for a pay-per-view of the club’s record for the off-season.

Zardes escaped by a possibility at a time on purpose in the 74th minute, but effectively tackled through Amro Tarek.

New York had no shots on purpose in the game.
