Former South Carolina defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward is expected to be the last member of Clemson’s football team, according to multiple media outlets.
Ward worked out for six seasons with Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier and most recently served as defensive coordinator at Chattanooga.
Ward appears dressed in a Clemson blouse in his profile picture on X, formerly known as Twitter, however, as of Thursday afternoon there had been no official announcement of his addition through Clemson or his role on coach Dabo Swinney’s team.
A spokesperson for Clemson’s athletic branch could not verify Ward’s addition as all Clemson football coaches “are on the road” and he has not been “informed of any finalized adjustments to the workforce or the roles that would result. “
Ward’s profile no longer appears on Chattanooga’s track and field and boxing website.
Ward, 57, is a former Alabama player and teammate of Swinney’s in 1989 and a graduate assistant to the Crimson Tide from 1991 when Swinney was a junior.
Ward then served as defensive backs coach at Chattanooga, Virginia Tech and Arkansas before joining Spurrier’s in South Carolina as defensive coordinator from 2009 to 2015.
After a stint as defensive coordinator at Fresno State in 2016, Ward served as an assistant head coach in Louisville for two seasons and interim head coach of the Cardinals for two games following the firing of Bobby Petrino in 2018.
Ward then joined Chattanooga for five seasons and helped lead the Mocs to the FCS playoffs last season, provoking No. thirteen Austin Peay before losing to No. 7 Furman in the second round.
Ward also coached special defensive backs and helped the NFL’s Oakland Raiders in 2006-07.
