David Moyes boldly claimed West Ham led “3-0 at half-time” against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League on Thursday.
The Hammers bowed out of the festival in the quarter-finals at the hands of the German champions after their second leg ended in a 1-1 draw in east London.
Michail Antonio opened the scoring for Moyes before Jeremie Frimpong equalised for the Bundesliga in the 89th minute.
Moyes, who guided West Ham to Europa Conference League glory last season, is proud of his team’s performance.
“On the contrary, we probably scored 3 in the first half and we didn’t run any danger when we did,” Moyes said after the game.
“In the first leg we went much deeper and defended incredibly well for the 85 minutes.
“Tonight we were absolutely different and put a lot of pressure on them. Really, we’re 2-0, maybe 3-0 at half-time.
“We’ve had Manchester City here and Liverpool here over the years, and I’ve said I need to give the big groups a game.
“I think we gave them a smart game tonight, but not enough and that’s the difference.
“They’re probably in a higher point and they definitely have more to gain off the bench, which they had tonight.
“It was difficult for us to reach the same power levels that we had tonight in the first half. “
Meanwhile, West Ham striker Antonio remained furious after the clash and criticised the in-form referees.
