Brendan Rodgers has warned against his claims that Celtic want to be braver in the move market, protecting Dermot Desmond amid growing fan fury.
Parkhead’s help was shaken after a quiet January window along with a slip-up in the Scottish Premiership name race against managerless Aberdeen, with a protest against Parkhead’s hierarchy’s takeover before the attack and chants of “sack the board of directors”. Ahead of the clash with the Dons, boss Rodgers agreed with enthusiasts that the club could have been “brawder” in their January draft with Adam Idah and Nicolas Kuhn the only newcomers in the winter window.
Chairman Peter Lawwell and Celtic majority shareholder Desmond have been thrown in the firing line after failing to go on a spending spree with Rangers ramping up the pressure on the Hoops in the title race, which followed a disappointing Champions League campaign. Going into the clash with Aberdeen, Rodgers was asked to clarify his transfer comments.
But the Irishman allowed Desmond to deflect blame from Celtic enthusiasts by praising the supreme. Asked to “elaborate” on his transfer comments, Rodgers replied: “It’s a balance issue.
“Whenever you need to build a team and when you need to progress, for me it’s about bringing in players who can expand and improve. But also bringing in players who can be outside the box.
“That means you may have to spend a little more money. That’s something I’ll be looking to achieve here. If the players are there to contribute, it would actually improve and maybe have one player instead of four, and if that’s anything that can help the team, that’s what I’d like us to do in the future.
“The club has been a great success here for many years. The club is very well run. The guys on the board, Dermot and all the other guys.
“All the people. Really clever people and intelligent people. It’s no slight on them. What we want to do as a football club is able to progress, and for that progression, you want to be spending money on getting that next level of player in. If you have a few of them, then it takes you to the next level and that’s what we want to achieve.”
