Marshall’s soccer coach, Doc Holliday, is out after 11 seasons with Thundering Herd after the school announced Monday that it would be renewing his contract.
Holliday was named U. S. Conference Coach of the Year, but Thundering Herd lost his last three games of the season after starting 7-0 and 15th in the Amway Coaches poll.
Holliday, 63, had an 85-54 record for Marshall, adding 6-2 in bowl games. His six-year contract expires on June 30.
“I need to thank Doc Holliday for the leadership he has given to this show for more than 11 seasons,” Marshall’s athletic director Mike Hamrick said in a statement. “In addition to his good fortune on the field, he directed his own program, graduated his student-athletes and prepared young people for life after football.
President Marshall Jerome Gilbert said a Hamrick-led study committee is being formed to help identify the candidates. The university said Hamrick would not make any public comment until the position is filled.
Holliday, originally from West Virginia, said on Twitter: “I have strived to create and leave the most wonderful program of what I discovered. I’m proud to leave the show in a wonderful place. “

Marshall’s defense led the country with thirteen allowed problems consistent with the game and yielded the second lowest number of yards with 279 consistent with the game. But Marshall has been beaten 59-23 in his last three games.
Holliday took Marshall to the 2014 U. S. Conference Championship and two appearances in the name game, adding this season. Under him, Marshall had three consecutive seasons of 10 wins from 2013 to 2015.
Marshall, the first head coaching position for Holliday, who is known as a forged recruiter and spent three decades as an assistant, most of them in West Virginia. When Holliday took office in 2010, Marshall had not had a winning season since 2003.
