Door Gallery | The Hammers start the New Year with Manchester City’s rhythm

West Ham United’s first game of the New Year ended in a 4-1 Premier League defeat at Manchester City on Saturday.

The Irons were given a smart start at the Etihad Stadium, going close through Mohammed Kudus and Tomáš Souček, but fell with ten minutes remaining.

There was an element of fortune to the Citizens’ opener, as Savinho’s cross from the left took a wicked deflection off Vladimír Coufal and left Alphonse Areola wrongfooted.

Three minutes before the break, Manchester City took a stranglehold on the contest. Again Savinho was involved, sending a teasing cross over for Erling Haaland to nod home at the far post.

The Hammers’ task turned practically 11 minutes after the restart when Haaland beat Areola to make it 3-0.

And only two minutes later, there were 4 thanks for the arrival of Phil Foden.

Niclas Füllkrug pulled one back with 19 minutes remaining in Manchester, but it was too little, too late for the travelling east Londoners.
