Borussia Dortmund reached their first Champions League semi-final in 11 years after pulling off a fine second-half comeback to beat Atletico Madrid 5-4 on aggregate.
After squandering the first leg 2-1 in Madrid, Dortmund temporarily turned things around with Julian Brandt and Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen scoring from tight angles in the first half.
But Atletico Madrid made it 2-1 that night and 3-3 on aggregate when Mario Hermoso’s header deflected off Dortmund defender Matts Hummels shortly after the restart.
Angel Correa then gave Atletico Madrid a 4-3 aggregate lead when they rallied from close range in the 64th minute.
But Dortmund equalized in a thrilling moment when Niclas Fullkrug headed home Marcel Sabizer’s cross with a circular header in the 71st minute.
And less than three minutes later, Sabitzer put the ball in Dortmund’s side with a shot into the bottom corner to close out the quarter-finals.
