Sebastien Haller scored twice as Borussia Dortmund beat fourth-division TSV Schott Mainz 6-1 on Saturday in the first round of the German Cup to start their domestic season with victory.
Dortmund, who failed to clinch the Bundesliga name last season by winning their last game, got off to a smart start and were never bothered by their opponents.
The visitors, with 11,000 fans in Mainz, temporarily took a two-goal lead thanks to Haller’s powerful header in the 22nd minute and Julian Brandt’s shot following a help from Donyell Malen two minutes later.
The hosts closed the gap in the 34th before Haller beat three defenders to score his second goal a minute later.
Dortmund struck back on the hour with Marcel Sabitzer after a very good individual shot from Marco Reus in the 57th, and Malen scored his fifth goal in the 79th after a combination of quick passes.
Substitute Youssoufa Moukoko scored a dozen with five minutes left to complete the scoring ahead of Dortmund’s Bundesliga opener against Cologne next week.
