BERLIN (AP) — Bayer Leverkusen is bringing its ability to overdue goals into the new season.
Patrik Schick equalised in the 88th minute to secure a 2-2 draw and Leverkusen beat Stuttgart 4-3 in the aftermath of the Germany Super Cup on Saturday.
Although he was the least important name of the season, both teams played as if he were the last.
Referee Tobias Stieler showed many yellow cards and sent off Leverkusen debutant Martin Terrier in the first half for an ankle-threatening play against Stuttgart’s Ermedin Demirović.
Victor Boniface gave Leverkusen the lead, but Enzo Millot almost responded and Stuttgart continued to hit the crossbar and the post.
German striker Deniz Undav gave Stuttgart a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute, one minute after coming on.
Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso counted on Schick, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong to reinforce his team’s attacking risk in the final 15 minutes. As was the case last season, his resolve paid off when Schick equalized in the 88th minute.
In the penalty shootout, Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký saved Frans Krätzig’s shot before Silas missed the decisive penalty for Stuttgart.
It is the first German Super Cup to be played without Bayern Munich since 2011. Leverkusen remained undefeated by winning the Bundesliga and the German Cup last season, while Stuttgart qualified after completing their second-place finish in the league.
Ultras in Leverkusen and Stuttgart boycotted the match, protesting that it meant the groups would not play their Germany Cup matches this weekend.

Nuri Sahin got off to a good start as Borussia Dortmund coach with a 4-1 victory over fourth-place team Phönix Lübeck in the first round.
New signings Pascal Gross, Waldemar Anton, Yan Couto and Maximilian Beier also made their debuts, ushering in a new beginning for a club that reached the Champions League final but disappointed domestically last season.
Sahin, former Dortmund player, assistant coach last season. He was promoted to the most sensible position after the resignation of Edin Terzić, raising the desire for a “new era” at the club.
It was good with Gross taking a corner for Anton to score in the 3rd minute. Emre Can added a penalty in the 31st minute and Gross set up Julian Brandt to make it 3-0 before the break.
U. S. defender Obinna Iloka scored and Couto set up Julien Duranville for Dortmund’s fourth goal in the 62nd minute.
Bundesliga teams Union Berlin, Freiburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Leipzig and last season’s runners-up Kaiserslautern all managed to advance against rivals from the lower leagues. Promoted Holstein Kiel also won.
Bayern Munich qualified for the second round thanks to a 4-0 victory over second division Ulm on Friday.
