EA Sports FC 25 Preview: New Tactics, Dirty Fouls, and the Best Career Mode of All Time

I don’t know about you, though, when it comes to EA’s flagship football series, I’ve been more of a fan of Career Mode than Ultimate Team. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve endured quite a bit of humiliation from 12-year-olds satisfied with Griddy (damn TikTok!), however, suffice it to say that the novelty of bright pink FUT player cards has long since worn off.

Career mode, for all its flaws, remains the delight of choice for players who prioritize authenticity over arcade-style fun, and the multitude of realism-focused improvements coming to EA Sports FC 25 may become the This year’s edition of the annual soccer simulation. a must see. -purchase for my fellow offline players.

I’ve been hands-on with EA Sports FC 25 ahead of its release on September 20, and I’ve rounded up my favorite new gameplay features below, from planned fouls and player errors to EA’s revamped tactics system.

FC IQ is the umbrella term for what EA describes as “the most significant tactical update in over a decade. “Essentially, you’ll have a lot more control over how your team plays as a unit, and the all-new player roles, which we decide through real-world knowledge, will give individual players the freedom to function outdoors from their classic positions. .

The aim of the game here is to reflect the more fluid (i. e. non-traditional) tactical approaches taken by real-world managers such as Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti. You can now have your team transfer between pre-set formations on the fly: transfer from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1, for example, while in-game tactical recommendations will recommend tactical changes to the situation of the game in question.

Of course, the players are soccer coaches, so it remains to be seen how well the FC 25 players use those new (and complex) tactical tools, but it’s smart to see EA making such an effort with one facet of the game. that was overlooked in the past. . FIFA experience.

Fortunately, the redesigned player role formula is much more accessible. You can now create and assign hybrid player positions such as inverted defender, deep midfielder and attacking winger, making flexible players like Bernardo Silva and Antoine Griezmann much more effective than they were. in previous entries. These new player roles will also be incorporated into Ultimate Team.

Career Mode has been about allowing players to live out their managerial fantasies, and in FC 25, EA combines the worlds of genuine and virtual football in a whole new way.

The initial live editions will allow you to immerse yourself in the real conditions of the club as they unfold throughout the season. If, for example, Enzo Maresca is fired as Chelsea manager in January, or Erling Haaland suffers a season-ending injury in November, he will be able to embark on a new career save and direct the delivery from then on. . EA says those key “snapshots” may come with relegation battles, mid-season transfers and surprise manager departures, and will apply to both player mode and manager mode.

Actual season stats, league positioning, team form, and player injuries will be replicated in-game if you decide to play from one of those live starting points. Therefore, this year’s Career Mode will literally be the most realistic to date.

Other career mode innovations come with the addition of women’s soccer and the ability to expand your youth team in regular five-player tournaments. Excellent!

Every new EA Sports game brings small tweaks to the gameplay, and EA Sports FC 25 is no different. This year, however, the updates are decidedly more fun than usual.

For starters, you can commit an intentional foul against FC 25 players holding RB A/X. Sure, it’s technically imaginable to maliciously drag players since the first FIFA game in 1994, but until now, you’ve never been able to intentionally hit a player. player down while holding his jersey. You’ll receive an instant yellow card for this, however, tactical fouls are common in today’s real world, so it’s smart for EA to load this option on FC 25.

Players can now also slide on FC 25, which adds some other variables to the game that deserve to have been included a long time ago. During my brief practice session, only two of my players slipped (both times on a rainy day) and neither of them slipped. it affected the trajectory of my pass. I’m not sure those mistakes can happen without the ball, as Steven Gerrard does, but I doubt EA will implement a potentially revolutionary mechanism that players can’t influence themselves. Football is unpredictable!

Finally, for football purists, FC 25 reintroduces the ability to “queue” a full match-day introduction, rather than allowing the game to automatically skip broadcast formalities in favor of this montage of the highlights of EA Sports FC 24. I realize that as many players as possible should get straight to the action, but I’m pleased that we have the opportunity to see team starts and team sheet animations again.   If only we could get Martin Tyler back too. . .

EA Sports FC 25 is available for pre-order now. The game is scheduled to release on September 20 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
