FILADELFIA (AP) – The Philadelphia Eagles will reach the playoffs for the first time since Doug Pederson’s first season as coach in 2016 and he is sure he will continue to bring them back to the playoffs.
The Eagles (4-10-1) were the first team eliminated in the unhappy NFC East, which will send the playoffs to a team with a regrettable track record.
Pederson led Philadelphia to the name of the franchise’s Super Bowl in its current season, a victory in the playoffs the following year and a departmental championship last season. The team has a 23-26-1 record, adding the playoffs, since the Super Bowl win, but Pederson has two years to play on his contract, so it would be wonderful if owner Jeffrey Lurie fired him after a season in which the team had a series of injuries to the primary starters.
“As far as my prestige is concerned, it is clear that Jeffrey and I have had many conversations during the season. Our main goal is this season right now,” Pederson said Monday. “And actually my trust is in me, I know. Precisely how to fix things. We’ve won a lot of games here, we’ve been in the playoffs 3 of the five years I’ve been here and a championship and all that. I’ve noticed, I’ve noticed.
“That’s where my trust lies. So those conversations we’re talking about will take their place at the right time. “
Philadelphia’s biggest challenge is a lack of skill in offense, defense, and special teams. The team has selected a Pro Bowl player, Quarterback Carson Wentz, since 2014.
However, Pederson does not intend to seek more strength over workers’ decisions; prefers to review and let general manager Howie Roseman and his team manage player acquisition.
“You go into this business, especially as a head coach, and you do it because you like to be with the players and you need to teach football,” Pederson said. “I need to be a component of the solution. I need to be a component of the evaluation process. I need to be a heard voice, and I need to have that collaborative communication with him and Howie and be a part of that process.
“I don’t necessarily need to cross that line because it prevents you from doing your homework as head football coach. I like to be in the football aspect as a former footballer and now as a coach. That’s where my love lies. But still, I need to be a component of the solution. I need to compare and bring people here who can win.
The toughest resolution the Eagles face is the quarterback position for low-season considerations. Wentz retired in week 13. Jalen Hurts provided a spark, but produced combined results.
Down 30-17 from the Cowboys on Sunday, Hurts committed consecutive ball losses in the red zone in the last quarter.
THAT WORKS
Hurts has 238 yards on the court in three openings. His ability to run makes the playback option one of Philadelphia’s offensive moves.
NEED HELP
The secondary line, offensive, organization of receivers and supporters want a significant improvement.
Shop
Team inventory project. The loss to Washington ensured that the Eagles would choose no less than the tenth and that they could succeed at No. 3. They will enter in week 17 with the sixth place.
STOCK DOWN
Cornerman Michael Jacquet, an unsused rookie forced to play for injuries, allowed seven receptions for 182 yards and two touchdowns.
Hurt
Fletcher Cox, six times in the Pro Bowl, left the game with a stinger and the Eagles were outperformed 34-3 after his departure.
KEY NUMBER
513 – The defense allowed more than 500 yards per consecutive game.
NEXT STEPS
The Eagles host Washington (6-9) on Sunday night. If Philly wins, the winner of the Cowboys-Giants wins the NFC East.
