The centenary debate about who will be the best, Maradona or Pelé, will continue and Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s duo recently gave their own ideas: “He’s leaving us but he’s not going anywhere, because Diego is eternal,” Messi said. For his part, Pelé feels nothing yet for the loss of what he calls an expensive friend. “One day, I hope, we’ll play football in combination in the sky,” the Brazilian star said.
What remains forever in the minds of football fans is its functionality at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, which was marred by controversy: in his team’s quarter-final match against England, he scored a goal with the use of his hand, a gesture that would result in a yellow card, but was allowed because referees did not have a transparent view of the game (Maradona would then describe this purpose as scored with “God’s hand”). After the legend’s death, EA Sports paid tribute by giving away a Maradona title in FIFA 21, while its Icon card also skyrocketed into the FIFA Ultimate Team movement market as the number of other people who wanted to play with it skyrocketed.
