Football season doesn’t mean the same thing in Latrobe’s domain as it does in Pittsburgh.
In Pittsburgh, football season is a fall phenomenon. It’s Sunday afternoon, Monday night, and the games are cold enough to freeze a horrible towel. These are months of fans who live and die with the clock in shape and the scoreboard.
In Westmoreland County, the season is early. Wednesday arrived.
In Westmoreland County, the Pittsburgh Steelers have become the de facto Latrobe Steelers during a 3-week educational camp at Saint Vincent College in Unity.
Camp football is all about the team improving their skills for the upcoming season, combining new players with old ones as coaches figure out how to balance strengths with strategy. The goal is touchdowns. It’s learning, running, and growing.
For fans, it’s just as different.
They show up to see the team arrive for the joy of seeing the players. They come to Friday night’s scrums not to see who wins because it’s the Steelers who are playing the Steelers. They know the Steelers are going to win. It’s exciting to see them take the field.
The same is how the enthusiasm surrounding one of the National Football League’s most iconic teams turns into money.
The Steelers are a battery that powers the economy. This is true in Pittsburgh. Es equally true in the Latrobe area.
For six months, fans spend their money on tickets, jerseys, hotel rooms, food and drinks on game days in Pittsburgh. Over the past three weeks, the same thing has happened in Latrobe and Unity. Restaurants and stores are experiencing real growth in business. The hotels are filling up. The same goes for houses through sites like Airbnb.
“They’re counting on the Steelers to come to town,” Greater Latrobe Director Zac Heide said.
Thousands more people will show up in Saint-Vincent in the coming weeks. They will make the team with their presence. They will spread to the surrounding network and region with your money in a symbiotic relationship.
Are you in a position to play some football?Latrobe is.
