The Senegalese star completed his 22 million pound transfer to Stamford Bridge from Rennes on Thursday and will be the first African goalkeeper to form Les Bleus.
The 28-year-old is the newest among a number of stars on the continent who have played for Chelsea over the years, John Obi Mikel, Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o and Michael Essien.
And Mendy is well aware of Chelsea’s history with African players, which means there will be a weight waiting for him to act.
“Most of the biggest Africans have played for this team,” Mendy told the club’s official website.
“Drogba, Essien, Eto’o, Mikel, when you see this, you must continue. As far as the doorman is concerned, I’m the first, so I’m proud of Array, and that’s also a great duty. “
Mendy signed to provide a festival for striker Kepa Arrizabalaga after Blues manager Frank Lampard got tired of the Spaniard’s mistakes between the sticks.
