Ange Postecoglou has signalled the end is near for one of his Tottenham stars after a brutal put-down in his latest press conference, and a transfer to a European giant is partially agreed.
Tottenham’s main objective this month is to get a work-ready centre-back who can make a quick impact. Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been Postecoglou’s preferred duo since taking over. However, Romero has been sidelined lately due to a hamstring injury. Van de Ven has just recovered from a hamstring challenge.
Hamstring disorders don’t prevent that, as the flexible Ben Davies suffered this type of injury in Tottenham’s 1-0 FA Cup third-round win over Burnley on Friday night.
Davies took over at left-back in Van de Ven’s absence. His main partner, while Romero was also absent, had been, surprisingly, Emerson Royal.
The Brazilian is a right-back by trade, meaning Eric Dier – the last centre-half standing – had been overlooked.
Dier has made just 4 appearances this season despite injuries that have plagued his teammates. Obviously, his coach doesn’t like him, and his inability to play in the top lane is perhaps the main explanation for his omissions.
The 29-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season and Spurs are in a position to make money this month while they can.
A move to Bayern Munich to link up with former teammate Harry Kane is on the cards. Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel has approved the move due to his admiration of three specific aspects in Dier’s game.
However, following news that makeshift centre-back Davies has suffered a hamstring injury, a reporter at Postecoglou’s press conference on Friday afternoon naturally asked if Dier’s departure had been torpedoed.
A reporter asked: “If Ben Davies gets injured, could you lose Eric Dier this month?
Postecoglou paused and looked at the reporter before saying, “Yes. “
Obviously, Dier and Postecoglou intended to be and the Spurs manager is perfectly willing to cut ties with the defender, regardless of the annihilation of his defensive options.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, The Guardian and Sky Germany have all shown in the last 24 hours that Dier has reached an agreement with Bayern Munich.
Romano also clarified that the explanation for why a move to Bayern did not materialise last summer is similar to Dier’s insistence that he be given a three-year contract until 2026.
A new update from the journalist revealed that “the now is different”, suggesting that Dier committed to this call after saying yes to the German giant.

As for Dier’s proposed fee, Plettenberg would be “less than €5 million. “
