The reigning champions sent an initial statement of intent, with Haaland beating goalkeeper Florian Stritzel in the first minute, only to see his effort from a tight angle cleared of the line. Undeterred, Marco Rose’s side continued to dominate and came close when Marco Reus’ 25-yard free-kick was deflected around the post by Stritzel. Dortmund temporarily had the breakthrough their superiority deserved, when Haaland held on to Reus’ pass to go home from 16 yards. The Norwegian striker doubled his score and his team’s from the penalty spot, sending Stritzel in the wrong direction to put BVB firmly into the break.
If the hosts had any hope of staging a comeback at half-time, Haaland ensured it would not materialise shortly after the restart when he collected a pass from Gio Reyna inside the area. His initial shot was well saved by Stritzel, but No. Dortmund’s nine was the fastest on the rebound and went over the line from close range. To their credit, Wiesbaden refused to concede and went close several times, first when Maximilian Thiel discovered Felix Passlack in centre, before Kevin Lankford headed a short distance away. Summer signing Donyell Malen made his competitive debut for Dortmund behind and almost capped the possibility with a goal, only to see Stritzel make another great save. In the end, it didn’t matter; the night belonged to Haaland as Dortmund sealed their position in the round of moments.
