Hickling Broad is the one in East Anglia, with a nature reserve of 1,500 acres in the Upper Thurne River system.
The site is controlled through the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, which has placed cattle and semi-wild ponies on the ground to help it, allowing flora and fauna to thrive. Other wild animals come with the common crane, avetoro, common coalman and Cetti warbler, as well as a lot of rare swallowtail butterflies that are born here in the spring.
In January, the rod is cut for advertising use, turning so that the earth is cut in a five-year cycle.
You can worry about Hickling Broad through volunteering. There is a diversity of voluntary vacancies that can be had in a variety of other capacities. See the list and bureaucracy of applications here.
