Europa League draw LIVE: Liverpool and West Ham to be informed of quarter-final fate

n n n ‘. concat(e. i18n. t(“search. voice. recognition_retry”),’n

Liverpool will face Italian opposition in the Europa League quarter-finals in the form of Atalanta, while fellow Premier League side West Ham will take on one of the toughest teams remaining in the competition – Bayer Leverkusen – after the draw took place at Uefa’s headquarters in Nyon this afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are the slight favourites to win the tournament after thrashing Sparta Prague 11-2 in the last 16 and will play Atalanta in the quarter-finals with the first leg at Anfield, while West Ham overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit to down Freiburg this week but now face another German side, with the mammoth task of Xabi Alonso’s all-conquering Leverkusen in front of them.

The first quarter-final drawn out was a tasty all-Italian clash between AC Milan and Roma, where the sides will renew a rivalry that has seen them both climb into Serie A’s top five this season, while Benfica of Portugal and French side Marseille will also do battle for a spot in the semi-finals.

If Liverpool were to beat Atalanta, they would face the winner Benfica-Marseille for a place in the final, while the Hammers’ praise for defying the odds against a Leverkusen side who have lost just one game this season would be a semi-final against either AC Milan or Roma.

Liverpool faced Italian side Atalanta in the round of 16 of the Europa League.

The teams’ previous meetings came at the organisational level of the Champions League in 2020-21, with the Reds beating Atalanta 5-0 in Bergamo and then losing 2-0 at Anfield.

West Ham face a tough challenge against Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who are unbeaten in 37 games in all competitions this season under their highly respected coach Xabi Alonso.

Liverpool and West Ham face off ahead of the final in Dublin after the semi-final draw also separated the Premier League teams.

The 16th round will be played on April 11 and 18, with the final scheduled for Wednesday, May 22.

12:52, Lawrence Ostlere

Paris St Germain and Barcelona will meet in the round of 16, as will Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

The first leg of the quarter-finals will be played on 9 and 10 April, with the second legs the following week. The semi-finals will be played on 30 April and 1 May, and the second legs on 7 and 8 May. Wembley will host the final on Saturday, June 1.

City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, is enjoying the clash with Real and said: “We’ve been betting on them for a while in recent seasons. We always beat them in the semi-finals last year – it was unbelievable. “Last season, when we played them at home in the second leg, we played a very high-level game.

“We know how strong they are – they lead the league. They have smart players, they play smart football and they have one of the best players in the world.

Asked if City could retain their title, Begiristain replied: “Yes, why not? We’re doing very well in this festival and winning the games. Mentally, we are strong and we have the utmost confidence. “

“We want to beat Real Madrid. We’re confident: in the last few years we’ve fought for this festival and last year we won it. We look forward to continuing this winning momentum.

A reminder of what happened earlier in the Champions League draw, where Manchester City won a blockbuster in the Champions League quarter-finals, 14-time European champions Real Madrid.

They have met in the semi-finals in the past two seasons, with City beating Real 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium last season en route to winning their first Champions League title.

Arsenal faced six-time European champions Bayern Munich, whose star striker Harry Kane is the former talisman of bitter north London rivals Tottenham.

The Gunners have lost their last three games to Bayern 5-1, so this time they are hoping for much better.

City and Arsenal will meet in the semi-finals if they manage to negotiate their quarter-final.

12:27, Lawrence Ostlere

This concludes the draws for the Champions League and Europa League, and the Conference League approaches, where Aston Villa have qualified for the quarter-finals.

The semi-final draw allows Liverpool to get a pretty smart path to the final in Dublin. If the odds before the draw are something that can be overlooked, it doesn’t do much good for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

This, of course, means that things won’t get much more complicated for West Ham, apart from the fact that they possibly won’t face Liverpool until the final. David Moyes’ team will have to do it the hard way.

The bookmakers have no doubts about the favorites to win the Europa League. Liverpool are chasing 4 trophies, they have already won the Carabao Cup, and this festival could well be their ultimate source of more titles.

Leverkusen, however, are on a normal 37-match unbeaten streak and are almost certain to win the Bundesliga. No one will need to play them in the quarterfinals. It would be a clever narrative if Xabi Alonso opposed the club he is so closely associated with.

David Moyes took the handbrake at West Ham and saw them qualify for the Europa League round of 16 with a 5-0 win over Freiburg.

Hammers boss Moyes has unusually named an attacking line-up in a bid to make amends for last week’s 1-0 first-leg defeat in Germany.

He was rewarded with a brilliant performance as goals from Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, Aaron Cresswell and two from Mohammed Kudus, adding a sensational solo effort, secured a 5-1 aggregate win and a place in the European quarter-finals for a third match. successive seasons.

We now move on to the draw for the quarter-finals of the Europa League, in about 20 minutes.

Liverpool and West Ham beat Sparta Prague and Freiburg respectively in last place to earn their position in the bottom eight.

11:33, Lawrence Ostlere

The big draw is the prospect of Real Madrid taking on Manchester City in a clash worthy of a Champions League final.

Pep Guardiola’s men are the reigning champions, Carlo Ancelotti’s club is the most successful club of all time in European competition. Bellingham vs. Rodri, Vinicius vs. Walker, Kroos vs. De Bruyne. . . Yes, please.

11:28, Lawrence Ostlere

Harry Kane’s return to north London to face Arsenal is one of the headlines of the quarter-final draw. He’s been superb since joining Bayern Munich in the summer, with a ridiculous total of 36 goals in 34 games, not to mention plenty of goals. help.

But Bayern stammered: the Bundesliga name is almost over with Bayer Leverkusen well ahead and coach Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the season. Tuchel has won this festival before, but Arsenal will be keen to try their luck against Bayern. in two games. It’s a tantalizing prospect.

Arsenal will face Manchester City in the semi-finals, if either of them wins the quarter-finals. It has to be said that this is the most powerful part of the table and has opened up a bit for the other 4 clubs.

Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr has called on UEFA to punish Atletico Madrid fans for their alleged racist chants ahead of his team’s Champions League match against Inter Milan on Wednesday.

A video posted on social media appears to show Atletico fans outside Madrid’s Metropolitano stadium chanting racist slurs at the Real Madrid striker.

“I hope to already have an idea of his punishment in the Champions League, in UEFA,” Vinicius said on Thursday on the social network X. “It’s a sad reality, it happens even in games I don’t play. “

The Madrid winger has been subjected to racist abuse on several occasions, triggering a series of campaigns abroad, in addition to the creation of a special FIFA anti-racism committee.

“If chants were heard in the stadium or on its grounds, then the disciplinary framework will assess the match minutes,” a UEFA spokesperson said in an email to Reuters.

Mikel Arteta tried to adopt a managerial attitude by congratulating his players for going all the way and beating Porto, but in the end he couldn’t contain the satisfied smile on his face. This was all too noticeable when he came out of the locker room and then sat down in front of the media.

Arteta delighted.

Those talking about the main winners’ criteria might say that this is too much for an undeniable penalty shootout win in the round of 16 of the Champions League against a team that Arsenal deserve to beat easily, in the way this team does. At times he has had his celebrations under control.

Of course, there was much more to it than that. The club hadn’t even reached the quarterfinals. The team had taken another step, and it was indeed a giant leap.

The Premier League’s hopes of earning an additional Champions League spot in next season’s revamped festival were particularly boosted on Thursday after West Ham United’s win over Freiburg.

The Champions League will be expanded to a 36-team tournament from 2024/25 and two of the four additional spots will be awarded to countries whose groups are participating in European competitions this season.

As UEFA showed on its website, England are lately in third place in the race, along with Italy and Germany, which would mean Serie A and the Bundesliga would finish in fifth place in the Champions League next season.

But the gap between Germany and England narrowed after Thursday’s Europa League results, and England — who have five groups left in the European festival this season to Germany’s three — will almost certainly overtake Germany and borrow that extra Champions League spot.

UPDATE: Race for additional Champions League spots!England, five groups remaining, Germany only three. Almost England and Italy. ⏩ 1. Italy 17,714⏩ 2.  Germany 16. 357- ⏩ 3.  England 16. 250⏩ 4. France 14. 750⏩ five. Spain 14,437⏩ 6. Czechia 13,000https://t. co/o17wfxvsiw

There are four standout players in the race for the Champions League Golden Boot this season: Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Antoine Griezmann. That’s a bad list of European strikers, right?

Perhaps the new format of the Champions League, which begins next season, will solve the problem.

Since 2003, the Champions League has been a 32-team festival with a single organizational level followed by a knockout level. The 32 organisations, ranked according to their league position and UEFA coefficient, were divided into 8 organisations out of four, with the most sensible two organisations advancing to the knockout levels after six rounds of matches in a round-robin format with home-and-away matches. This was followed by 3 round-robin rounds, the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-final, with matches played home and away, before the final in the impartial round.

From 2024 onwards, the level of organisation will be different.

There are two major changes: 4 more groups will be added to bring the number of clubs to 36 and a single league format will be used. The championship phase will have an overall classification: from 1st to 36th, with 3 points to win and one to draw as usual. The 8 most sensible groups will advance to the knockout stages, and the 16 groups will finish between 9th and 24th in the two-legged play-off round, with a win securing passage to the knockout stages. Teams that are 25th or lower will be eliminated and will not advance to the Europa League.

After 8 heavy clubs reached the quarterfinals, is the Champions League too predictable?

It’s as predictable as many national leagues, writes Miguel Delaney, football editor. Profit has been prioritised over the suitability of the game, leading to the development of monetary disparities that are now beginning to existentially threaten the soul of sport’s unpredictability.

To put it bluntly, the immense money generated through gambling goes to very few places, which means that what you earn is almost irrelevant, aside from the damage it poses.

Jadon Sancho scored for the second game in a row as Borussia Dortmund qualified for the last 16 with a 2-0 win over PSV.

After the 1-1 draw in Eindhoven last month, they drew at the Westfalenstadion and the hosts got off to a better start. With just 3 minutes left when PSV failed to clear their lines and Julian Brandt set up Sancho, who touched before retreating to the back corner for his second goal since his loan spell from Manchester United in January.

The big moment for PSV came in added time, when Luuk de Jong made a one-two with Jordan Teze and only had Gregor Kobel in front of him, but he overflowed and seconds later it was 2-0. A mistake by Isaac Babadi allowed Reus to score without any problems and the Dortmund talisman went home to clinch their place in the quarter-finals.

Inter, who reached the final of the competition last year, took the lead at the Wanda Metropolitano thanks to Federico Dimarco, but Diego Simeone’s side showed the same spirit of never saying death.

Antoine Griezmann equalised and a late effort from Memphis Depay sent the 16-man into extra time where penalty kicks were needed.

Oblak played with saves to keep Sanchez and Klaassen out before Inter captain Martinez fired his opening kick wide to give Atletico a 3-2 victory on penalties.

Barcelona reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in four years after a thrilling 3-1 home win over Napoli in the second leg of the round of 16 that gave them a deserved 4-2 aggregate victory.

Early goals from Fermin Lopez and Joao Cancelo put the hosts on the right track and, after Amir Rrahmani reduced the deficit before the break, Robert Lewandowski secured victory with a third goal.

Napoli had never beaten Barca in their last five meetings and it proved to be a repeat of the 2020 Champions League fixture with the Spaniards winning 3-1 at home after a 1-1 draw at Napoli.

It is the last time Barça have won a knockout match at the festival and their recent top qualification for the round of 16.

David Raya is doing everything he can to keep Arsenal going. They used every drop of strength demanded by Mikel Arteta to beat Porto with a single kick and reach their first Champions League quarter-final since 2010. the first Champions League penalty shootout since the 2015-16 final. Raya made a brilliant save from Galen and some other relatively fortunate one from Wendell, the moment was difficult and rightly saw Arsenal off.

In such situations, questions may arise about the physical and intellectual burden of such a game, but Arteta’s team will not play any other games for 19 days. They also have something positive to think about, as they have broken a real blockade to the fullest. Illustrious of competitions. Not even Arsene Wenger has reached this point.
