Europe’s 10 biggest comebacks as Liverpool face a mountain to climb after Atalanta defeat

Liverpool want to awaken some of the spirits from beyond Europe if they are to beat Atalanta and continue their Europa League campaign.

The Reds collapsed after a 3-0 defeat at Anfield to the Italians on Thursday night. Former West Ham player Gianluca Scamacca scored twice, with Mario Pasalic also on the scoresheet.

Liverpool now have everything to do if they have any hope of reaching the semi-finals of Jurgen Klopp’s final season. But the Merseysiders know like everyone else that no team can be left out when it comes to home-and-away European fixtures.

Klopp on the bench for one of Liverpool’s greatest saving acts, but there were plenty of other notable returns. Mirror Football has reviewed 10 of the best. . .

Ajax is one of the stories of the 2018/19 Champions League season. The Dutch team, consisting of Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek and many others, has captured the attention of the football world.

It looked like his story was going to continue. They beat Spurs 1-0 at Wembley and then took a 2-0 lead in Amsterdam. The Brazilian scored a quick brace after the break and finished off his hat-trick almost with the last shot of the match.

Ajax’s young stars collapsed to the ground as Spurs celebrated wildly. While Tottenham overcame a one-goal deficit in the first leg, the context of this comeback allows them to rightly claim their position on this list.

After a 3-1 defeat in Turin in their Europa League encounter, Fulham looked set to eliminate Juventus. The result seemed to be more of a formality as David Trezeguet extended the Italian side’s lead at Craven Cottage.

That’s when things got a little crazy. Bobby Zamora gave the London side a lifeline before Fabio Cannavaro was sent off. Fulham took all the credit for this and got the point on aggregate after a brace from Zoltan Gera. Clint Dempsey’s delicious chip in the end led to what is one of the most remarkable effects in the club’s history.

Since this comeback is at the bottom of this list, you can judge for yourself how crazy it is. In the 2018/19 campaign, the Reds found themselves 3-0 down after the first leg.

Lionel Messi had scored twice, and Luis Suarez also scored at the Camp Nou. Liverpool had to be relentless at Anfield, and they were. . . and so on.

Divock Origi gave the Reds the lead early on, with Georginio Wijnaldum scoring twice to equalise. Origi then fired in a quick corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold to seal a memorable comeback for Klopp’s side, putting them on course for their sixth European Cup.

Oh my God, Barcelona. The Spanish giants have access to this list. Just a year before their collapse against Liverpool, they did it against Roma. Barcelona looked set to qualify after a 4-1 win over the Italian giants at the Camp Nou.

Edin Dzeko, scorer of Roma’s goal in Spain, scored in the second leg. Daniele De Rossi then reduced the deficit to a single goal from the penalty spot.

Kostas Manolas then went home in the final ten minutes to seal an overall victory and one of the most memorable comebacks of all time.

While Roma overcame a three-goal deficit, Italian rivals AC Milan went the other way. The old European champions themselves looked set to triumph in the semi-finals after winning the first leg 4-1.

Deportivo stunned their illustrious side by taking a three-goal lead before the break. Walter Pandiani, Juan Carlos Valerón and Albert Luque discovered the back of the net.

For the first time, this meant that the Spanish national team qualified thanks to away goals. All doubts were dispelled when Gonzalez Fran scored in the final 15 minutes to cap out a memorable night.

Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen has been one of the stories of the season and it is possible that they will still take home several trophies. They won the 1988 UEFA Cup thanks to a very good comeback against Espanyol.

At that time, the final was played in a home-and-away format. Espanyol looked halfway through the title after a 3-0 win in Spain.

Leverkusen bounced back with a three-goal win and then lifted the trophy with a penalty shootout victory. Leverkusen enthusiasts will certainly be expecting such drama this season.

From a three-pass comeback in the final to another, this one is going down in history as arguably the most productive Champions League comeback of all time. In a bid to win their fifth European crown, things didn’t go as planned for Liverpool.

Paolo Maldini’s first game put Milan on track. Hernán Crespo then scored a brace for the Italian side.

Liverpool bounced back after the break. Steven Gerrard and Vladimir Smicer scored quick kicks, while Xabi Alonso had the chance to equalise from the penalty spot. He saw his effort saved but controlled the rebound.

Jerzy Dudek beat Andriy Shevchenko in the ensuing penalty shootout to win the crown in Liverpool against all odds.

From an attack you’ve probably heard of to one you probably wouldn’t have. The attack took place in the 1962 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

Portugal’s Leixoes lost 6-2 to their Swiss opponents and had virtually no chance of progressing to the next round, but they forgot to tell them.

Leixoes won the second leg 5-0 to secure victory in what is potentially one of the most important (and most forgotten) European comebacks of all time.

Now, going back to more familiar names, Real Madrid has a glittering European history. However, the Spanish giants collapsed in a dismal 5-1 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the round of 16 of the 1985/86 UEFA Cup.

Any practical user would probably have bet on the German team to advance to the next round. But Real Madrid is still pretty much finished.

They scored four unanswered goals at the Bernabeu to seal a very good away win. Best of all, he set them on course to win the entire competition.

Would it have been something else? This time, it was the Spanish giants of Barcelona who staged the memorable comeback (or comeback).

The Catalans looked on the verge of being eliminated from the Champions League after a 4-0 defeat in Paris. A brace from Angel Di Maria and moves from Edinson Cavani and Julian Draxler went to the French giants.

Suarez and Messi scored at the Camp Nou, while Layvin Kurzawa scored an own goal to potentially set up a heroic comeback. However, Cavani scored with an hour remaining, leaving Barcelona needing 3 minutes to qualify.

Two late goals from Neymar gave them brief hope heading into the final. Sergi Roberto then scored the ultimate goal to propel Barcelona into the quarterfinals.
