Everton tell Manchester United they may not sell Jarrad Branthwaite unless transfer valuation is met

Everton have informed Manchester United that they intend to sanction the departure of Jarrad Branthwaite this summer, regardless of the cessation of their proposed takeover through the Friedkin Group (TFG).

Athletic said on Friday that TFG’s deal with Everton was cancelled, plunging the Premier League club back into a precarious monetary situation.

This has led to speculation about the desire to sell Branthwaite and whether United can still achieve a target for which they have rejected two offers.

But Everton’s move doesn’t change anything for the 22-year-old centre-back and his departure won’t even be considered unless his assessment is met.

This has been passed on to United and other approaches are welcome at Goodison Park.

Everton’s transfer fees imposed on defenders such as Harry Maguire, Wesley Fofana and Josko Gvardiol in recent years set the tone.

His need for changes has been reduced by the imminent departure of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa. If more budget is needed, the plan would be to allow players like Dominic Calvert-Lewin to leave before English foreigner Branthwaite.

Athletic reported earlier this month that Everton had rejected an improved offer from United of £45m plus £5m in add-ons.

This came after United’s initial offer of £35m and £8m in add-ons was immediately rejected.

United remain interested, any move would force Everton to reduce their asking price.

The Old Trafford side have already signed defender Leny Yoro from Lille, while Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt is among their options.

Raphael Varane left United when his contract expired and Willy Kambwala signed for Villarreal.
